    "...he only chargrges 20 percent when most others get forty...."

    I don't understand. 20 percent of what?

    I only replaced the breather box one time on our 1990 740, but I did it WITHOUT removing the intake manifold. I DID, however, remove the throttle body which is not very difficult and should be done to clean it periodically anyway.

    Some do that job without removing the manifold, but it's harder. And, you don't take it off the car entirely, you just pull it over towards the strut tower.
    Read kitty's link, it's worth it.

    PCV = Positive Crankcase Ventilation.

    If not already, get a manual. Volvo Green OEM manual, maybe a Haynes, and I dunno.

    Check the 700-900 FAQ, hosted right here on the brickboard, http://www.brickboard.com/FAQ/700-900/, for more info.

    Specifically here - http://www.brickboard.com/FAQ/700-900/EngineSealsBeltsVent.htm#Crankcase_Ventilation_A_Treatise

    You may want to search this forum for more PCV info.

    Yes, you have to remove all the crap to get at the oil separator / breather box.

    You may have a clogged PCV flame trap or a clogged oil separator breather box. As it is 24 years old and how many miles? These boxes can split, screwing up air intake vacuum and more and make a mess.

    Someone else can answer your questions.

    cheers,

    dud macdud.
