What year did the factory install intercoolers on 240 turbo's 200

As the title says I now it was a dealer installed option at one point. Are there any differences between the factory set up and dealer installed set up...

Thanks in advance

Well thank you all.. Very informative and a good topic... From this I can gather that both my 84.5 245TIC and 84 242TIC are a factory install.. Thanks all

What year did the factory install intercoolers on 240 turbo's 200

From Volvo's booklet "1984 Supplement to owners manual"

"...the most interesting new feature is the engine in the Volvo Turbo. This engine, called B21FT-Intercooler, which supersedes the B21FT, gives higher output, 162hp, and higher torque, 181 ft-lbs.,than the B21FT...".

The booklet describes the Charge Pressure Control System, with an RPM relay that allows higher boost pressure (up to 10.5psi) above 3750RPM, by off-loading the wastegate actuator.

There is no mention of the intercooler being a dealer-installed item, and the "supersedes" wording indicates it was factory installed...no more non-intercooler turbos, as confirmed by the Volvo press release linked in CB's post.

The booklet also discusses the "new heated Lambda-sond on the B23F engines..." and deletion of the Lambda warning light, also the incorporation of the shift indicator light on manual trans cars. There is a Shift Light Questionnaire ("how satisfied are you...) in the back of the Supplement, as a tear-off prepaid postcard. Apparently Volvo were not sure how this feature would be accepted by drivers. A "free Volvo gift" was offered if you sent in the questionnaire.

I can't say whether or not the intercooler was installed at the dealer once it became "standard equipment" but it is not out of the realm of possibility. My 1984 245 turbo-intercooler has a late '84 manufacturing date so I assume it was original to the car. I can tell you that many manufacturers list optional equipment that was installed by the dealer--examples--worked at a Volvo-MB-RR-Bentley dealer in the late 60's---A/C was installed at the dealer--or port--on the Volvos and the Mercedes cars. The same was true of the Hondas where I worked in the early 80's (a very nice "kit" I might add). I'm sure the promotional stuff for these items left out the fact that they weren't installed at the factory. -- Dave

Hi, Dave...It's almost certain that earler turbos could still be retrofitted with the intercooler kit either by owners or at the dealers, but the Volvo press release linked by CB in his post contained the following:

"Volvo Turbos for 1984 produced after December will have Intercooler Boost Systems installed at the factory. If you wish to buy a Volvo Turbo before that time, the intercooler kit may be installed as an accessory item."

Surely the "December" refers to December 1983, as the 84 model year cars would have been in production for a few months before that. So I would bet that your late production 84 had the system right off the factory floor.

...neither dealer nor factory, but the turbo placement and plumbing are interesting.

    Any guesses who dun it?

That layout looks like it would use a log manifold which is less efficient than the stock Volvo layout but easier to build with off-the-shelf tubing bends. It is the method prefered by shade-tree tuners everywhere to turbocharge an NA-only engine. Lots of LeMons cars using that to turbo-charge VW 2.slow motors in Jettas and Golfs.

The car was a '79 242 and manifold was stock. A prototype (4 into 2 into 1) pipe was custom-built by the independent shop in CT that Volvo hired for pre-production turbo development.

Interesting! So that heat wrapped pipe makes a 270 degree bend to head up and forward? That would be even less effeciante than a log manifold.

Ghetto-charging, as it has been nicknamed, has caused some impressive horsepower increases on the most mundane of motors in LeMons to include the tiny motor on the Mini (the realt thing, not the BMW). Most end in mechanical distruction of one form or another but the Mini, after its third set-up, has proven to be a very reliable ghetto-charged motor. Of course it is almost undriveable if the driver is not fully aware of the the slow spooling turbo with the sudden power hit once it is on the boost.

I do admit that I am happy to see the dearth of small turbo-charged mills now available with virtually flat torque curves from just off idle to just shy of their red line. Plan to test drive the 2014 Ford Transit Connect with the Ecoboost motor once they are in dealers. The LWB two-row model could be the first new vehicle I ever buy for myself...of course I would loose any ability to tow, dang it!

What year did the factory install intercoolers on 240 turbo's 200

I'm fairly certain the "factory" intercooler option became available during the 1983 model year, a mid-year sorta deal. As someone else has pointed out, at least the early ones may have actually been dealer installed. I am absolutely certain that late in 1983, the intercooler kit became available over-the-counter (for around $650 installed, as best I recall). I know this because I bought said kit as soon as it became available, for my '81 2 door. The 35 hp increase (127 to 162) felt more like a 100 hp increase at the time! I had a lot of fun with that car, a real sleeper at the stoplight grands prix. :)

I don't recall any differences between my kit and the early factory intercooler setups. The kit even came with the neat little "Intercooled" badge for the trunklid. And I *think* there was also a replacement boost guage in the kit, but don't quote me on that. IIRC, you went from 6.0 to 10.5 psi boost with installation of the kit.

    Dood,

Like, dood, search the turbobricks for more info and try the search feature here.

Me best guess is the factory installed the air-to-air heat exchanging intercooler around late 1982, for certain 1983 (I could be a year early on both guesses) up to the end in 1985.

Volvo dealerships offered the intercooler upgrade as a kit in 1983 or 1984 and may still do so. I dunno. The Turbo+ upgrade was also offered for 240 (and 700/900 turbo using Bosch K-Jetronic fuel control) in late 1983 or for sure 1984.

Differences? I dunno. Search and ask here and try the turbobricks.com. Best to ask there as they be all performance oriented with the Volvo and the going fast and kicking the crap out of those Hondas and VW and Tonka Trucks and Lionel 027 gauge model railroad layouts.

    Hoope that helps.

    cheers,

    dud.
Dooood, .027 gauge model railway layouts, DOOD. Me loves them choo-choo trains like the Chessie System, BNSF, Union Pacific, and such.

      Whoah, Dood...

      I know, it's a Tuesday night off... :)

Turbobricks is great if you want to go fast. Brickboard is great if you want to know facts.

Yes, there's some crossover, there's great information on both sites. There are also errors on both sites. Research, research. Take it all in.

And speaking of errors, I'll offer mine as an opinion so's it's not taken as fact.

All 240 intercooled turbo were either dealer installed (using factory sourced parts), or they were bought from the accessory catalog, and installed by who knows.

But I expect most were dealer installed.

Possible that '85 there were factory intercooled turbos. A friend claimed to have one. But I bet it was installed by the dealer.

Like I said, I might be wrong. Probably am. But I also know that from the early days of (at least going back to the early '50s)cars, a lot of 'new car options' were actually dealer installed accessories. Including the likes of rear view mirrors on early Jaguars, Limited slip rears on 122/123/140, etc, passenger side windshield wipers on older British cars (as well as some American stuff if you get into pre-war)...

And the intercooler on a 240 is a pretty simple project for a dealer. Not so easy for the factory to set up for, since it wasn't a common option.

If there are (maybe nonexistent) factory intercooler installations, I expect they are identical to the dealer installed. Perhaps slight mounting differences, but nothing different from a performance standpoint.

In the summer of 1983 Volvo announced an Intercooler Boost kit which would fit all Volvo Turbo models produced since their introduction in 1981. The kit, which was marketed through Volvo dealers as an accessory item, could be installed either by the dealer or by the customer in a little over three hours. When installed, the kit raised the engine output by more than 30 hp! In a test conducted by Car and Driver Magazine, an intercooled 1983 Volvo Turbo with manual transmission was able to accelerate from 0-to-60 mph in a spectacular 7.9 seconds.

Volvo Turbos for 1984 produced after December will have Intercooler Boost Systems installed at the factory. If you wish to buy a Volvo Turbo before that time, the intercooler kit may be installed as an accessory item. The kit, which is produced by Volvo, does not alter the new vehicle warranty when installed in accordance with the directions, nor does it alter the vehicle's emission characteristics. Information on kit prices and installation time is available at your nearest Volvo dealer.
