Opinions on installing a used low mileage oil pump 200 1986

Found a low mileage 240 N/A in the boneyard. I'd like to pull the oil pump out and have it available for my current '86 when I need it. $15 beats $175 (Eeuroparts.com) What's everyone's thoughts on this?

    Penny-wise and pound-foolish ... 200 1986

If you're ever going to pull the engine, after all that trouble, why would you ever think of putting in a used oil pump? Why not also scavenge the used water pump, the used thermostat, and don't stop there ... scavenge the old radiator hoses and even the small heater to block hoses. And then you can also collect the old vacuum hoses, and even the accessory bushings.

I hope you see that I'm being sarcastic. It all seems penny-wise and pound-foolish, at least IMHO.

I myself, would rather have a time proven oil pump anytime over a rebuilt unproven pump out of a box from who know where.

If you feel the pump from the yard is a Volvo original and undamaged I would used it in a heartbeat.
I believe the factories do their best to used a good pump maker. They have the most to lose when you consider the number of engines they are warranting.

Rebuilds are only as good as the core was!
You have to ask what was the reason it failed before it was rebuilt by just any yahoo!
You have to ask how well do new and used parts work together?

I figure a good rebuilder has to control part tolerances as good as the new pump so they only save some initial designing and material cost.

Oil pumps usually fail from bad bypass/check valves, plugged up screens or wear of the gears or their outer plate tolerances. In these pumps it can be the "o"ring on the pipe!

They are so reliable because they are simple in function.

Even the best anything does have a limit. At 500 K you got your's and Volvo's money out of it! It owes you nothing!

    Just my opinion.
    Phil

The one I have in now is the original and is 842 miles away from have 500K on it. Was planning on replacing the oil pan gasket, so I just figured while it's apart......installing a 'new' one in with new seals.

And suppose you did pick it and put it on the shelf for future use. Would it be better to drain any and all fluid in it first, or would that be a mechanical no-no since any gaskets etc. inside of it could potentially dry out while it is sitting indefinitely on a shelf?
