544 parts needed 444-544

I posted another ad here but it may have been in the wrong place. This is the forum I want to be in. I have a 65 544 in very nice condition B18 4 spd, but I really dont like the 4.56 gears. Im hitting around 3500 rpms at 62 mph. This is a Dana 27 correct? Are there any ring and pinions available in the High 3 or low 4 range? Do Jeep dana 27 ring and pinions interchange? (ebay)

Or, an overdrive unit? I understand there are 2 types? I dont know which I would need.

And then I am looking for nice used front and rear bumpers for said car. I see the 1100 dollar units on E-bay, but thats pretty rich.

Please keep us posted on the VW bumpers.
I am very curious on how the bumpers turn out. I feel the rear VW bumper has to much bow but the front may work for the front and rear on the 544. I would like to size up the VW bumpers but car shows and cruise nights will not start here for another month. I'll be in Austin TX next week I'll bring my tape measure and go Bug hunting.

        ordered! http://www.jbugs.com/category/vw-bug-bumpers-1952-1967.html

Total with shipping is $413.50 Should take a week to arrive. Euro blade style with bumperettes, and bumper brackets to modify with 544 locations. Seller didnt know just what material the bumpers are, but they are not aluminum, which is good for tweaking if needed.

I am also looking for an option for 544 bumpers. Looking at pictures of the VW bumpers it looks like the rear VW bumper has a large curve and not flat or slight curve in the center. Possibly the front VW bumper may work on the front and rear of a 544. Has anyone used and mounted VW bumpers on a 544? I realize the mounting brackets would need to be custom made.

I am going to be ordering these bumpers with all brackets and overiders within the next week. Will take pics of process. We shall see how well they integrate.

on a side note, due to the high cost of gaining highway speed by OD or gear ratios, I have decided to learn to enjoy the drive at 55 to 60 mph for now.

    Hello,

In june of 2002 I replaced my rear end withe a Ford Ranger 8.8 inch rear end. The differential has a long axle tube and a short axle tube. I had the long side cut down so a short side axle would fit. It ends up about 1/2 inch narrower than the stock Volvo rear end. I chose a 3.55 ratio. The site to read about axle codes, ratios, drum or disc brakes is THE RANGER STATION.

    I have pictures at http://s1153.photobucket.com/user/rayj5/library/?view=media#/user/rayj5/library/Volvo%20PV544%20build?page=1&_suid=1364560341114034320382647627245

      Regarding those Photobucket pics:

Would you be willing to elaborate on difficulty factor and performance? I find your car to be fascinating what with all those mods and Im envious as to how you knew what to swap.

      Thank you very much

        Hello,

Starting with the engine. I wanted something that I could find parts for easily at almost any auto parts store. Don't want to start a 5 or 6 hundred mile trip, have a problem and have to wait in a Motel on an old Volvo part. Engine is a stock 1987 2.5 with the addition of adjustable big block roller rockers. All stock engine wiring harness and computer.

Toyota Supra W58 tranny for strength and narrower than the Chevt T5. It does take an after market pilot bearing and a mid 90's Camaro 3.4 v6 flywheel and pressure plate. Uses a Supra clutch disc. Uses a Jeep bell housing.

Rear end I told you about.

Your best friend is a tape measure.

I was not willing to pay $200 per rotor, $140 per caliper then have to find a 122 or P1800 to get the caliper adapters. I have a rotor database of over 8,000 rotors with all the specs. I just matched up the 122 rotor specs to the closest rotors which turned out to be 2004 Land Rover Defender. The calipers I chose were from the Volvo 240 line. I made up a caliper adapter template and had a machine shop turn me out a pair. I have a couple of sets made up out of 6061 aluminum to fit the Volvo 122. When I get my 544 back from the body shop in Indiana I will make up adapters for the 544 out of steel.

        Hope this helps.

Very nice, but quite techie. Still say that for between free and $200 you could be running down the road with a standard 4.10 axle. Yer pays yer money, yer makes yer choice...............

Studebakers used the Dana 27 for a while, 10 spline axles too!
I recently sold one, limited slip with 3.07 gears. Talk about sluggish off the line. I believe it came from the V8 Hawk. It was going to go in my '65 Amazon, but I found a '67 which has the Dana 30 which became my project car.

Great to read your replies! Im learning quite a bit! I must say though, if it is gonna cost $1000. Im going to study alternatives like different brands of rear ends and maybe narrowing them. But that interferes with the upper links too...

The VW bumper is a eureka idea! I can get both front and rear with all the trimmings for under 500 Dollars easily. 67 and under with the euro bar and 2 guards only.

If anybody has used the VW bumpers, I would sure appreciate some feedback on how they are mounted, etc. Pics would be great. I need new bumpers and this is a great lead but i am years away from getting to those finishing touches.

Well this Volvo has 4.56 gears no doubt about it. Ive had the cover off and checked. And so far several others believe its a dana 27. That part I cant be absolutely positive about. I am thinking if I can get a gear set I wont need an overdrive.

VW bumpers you say? let me check that.

    Thanks for replies

      Hello,

You might have a 4:56 because someone in the past may have swapped in a rear end from a B16 544 or 444.

There are many ways to tell if you have a Dana 27.

1st, a Dana 27 will have a "27" cast into the webbing of the center housing. The "27 can be seen by looking in the upper right corner above the rear end cover.

2nd, the ring and pinion will have Dana or Spicer stamped into the edge of the ring gear and the ring gear will be have 8 bolts.

      Last year we installed a 3:54 ring and pinion in a 1963 544 with a Dana 27.

The parts, all of which were new or NOS(new old stock), cost $1000.00 and included the ring and pinion, a spider gear kit, carrier and pinion bearings, a carrier housing, and install kit which includes shims, pinion seal, cover gasket, ring bolts, and pinion nut.

Although a little sluggish off the line, he is able to keep up with his buddies with some pretty pricey sport cars from the 50's, 60's and 70's.

The aren't doing 100, but he can easily cruise at 80 and still hear the radio.

Mid-America motor works has just about every part imaginable for VW beetles. If you want a bumper, they've got them for all different years (with or without the towelbar).

Easiest and probably cheapest way of getting a 4.10 axle is to swap one in. Depends on if there is one available near you of course. Does mean you can tidy it up before fitting which is always a good idea.

B18 544s have 4.10 gears. It was the B16 models that had 4.56. It should be a Spicer 27, but I'm having a hard time finding alternate gear sets for them myself.

The two OD types are the D (originally used on B18 cars) and the J (used on B20 cars). The J has slightly less rev reduction than the D. Either will work fine, neither will fit in the trans tunnel without some modification.

I've seen 544s with bumpers meant for old VW Beetles that look like they belong. Those are available new for much less, if complete originality is not a big deal.
