'67 122S with all new front end. Needs alignment. I have the factory specs, which are: Caster 0 to 1, Camber 0 to 1/2, and Toe-in 0 to 0.26".
I had a thought (yeah, it happens) that radial tires would make some difference in how the front end is aligned. Anyone have proper specs other than factory settings?

Camber *negative* .5 degrees
As much positive caster as they can make happen (1/8" more shim on the rear bolt than on the front)
Just enough toe-in to be able to say there is some.

Would these be correct for the 140/164 also?
MANY thanks!

George, if you have PS on you 164, up the caster to at least +4.0° The more caster you run, the more negative camber your outside wheel develops when turning, that's why the modern cars run +10° & more.

Interesting. I'll see about that.
As far as I knew, power steering was standard on all 164s. Pretty tough when it quits!

Two of my 164's are the early model, both badged 164S. One is base model 4-speed 3.73 diff manual & steer ratio worse than 144. The other has sunroof, auto 3.31 & PS. I have a 74 164GL B30E auto 3.31. My old one was a 74 164GL B30E 4-speed, 3.54 with K cam, seriously ported exhausts, 6-3-1 headers & 2.5" exhaust. I miss that car a lot.

How about more information on the one with the K cam?
E-mail me offlist at [username follows] gdowns [at] cableone [dot]net [nothing follows]
and tell me about porting, improvement in perf with cam and whatever else comes to mind.
I have a K cam I plan to put in my 72 164E if I can get up the strength and live long enough.

My experience would indicate the negative camber/positive caster setup applies equally to the 140/160 series. As far as that goes, in my opinion it applies to pretty much anything Volvo built with double wishbone front suspension. I've always used these sort of settings with my street cars, be they 544, 122, 1800, or 140/160 variety. The only caveat... increased positive caster can result in increased steering effort, but this is usually only noticeable at very low speeds.

The 1960's front end is set for rag tyres & Volvo did no geometry chages for radial tyres. On my racer, I lowered the frontend 3", this put the top A-arm level so that negative camber should start to happen instantly. Toyed with lowering the inside of the top A-arm, but never got back to it.
How much negative camber can you have during straight line braking before stoping ability detriorates?

I'm gonna get real scientific here and say... a bunch. :)
I ran 3 degrees negative camber on my 142 racecar and I don't remember ever locking up a front wheel, while braking with the best of the similarly equipped cars. This is with some pretty sticky tires, which always helps.
My car was similarly lowered, although I had a hard limit that I could not exceed... by the rules, rocker panel (not including pinch weld) has to be 5 inches above ground. Couldn't move suspension pickup points (or shock mount locations, for that matter), so it's simply a lowered stock front suspension with really good shocks to go with much stiffer (675 lb/in) springs and heavier anti-roll bar.

I used -3°camber, +3° caster & 10mm toe out, which was good with 80mm wider track, it was always ready to turn a corner with both wheels pointing outwards, but no problem with it on a straight highway.
-3°,+3° was the limit on my car, the top a-arms rubbed the frame & the shims took a bit of convincing to get in.

George, I'm a lot less familiar with the 140/164. I would imagine so, though -- certainly you want some negative camber with modern tires.

Thanks, Phil. Thought it would be different than factory.
