driver's side mirror glass fell off 900

On my 1995 940 my mirror glass fell off! Just the plain glass became detached from the plastic backing. Maybe that's called a back plate or something. Anyway, I'd like to just stick on new glass without fooling around with taking off the plastic plate because I'm worried that I'll just break the plastic and create a big mess. But anyway, I see that some mirrors are said to be heated. I'm guessing that there is an element in the back plate (?) and that it is really just the plate that is heated. Anyway, by looking on ebay I see that some complete assemblies are sold as 'not defrost'. So my question is: if mine is currently not heated (and I don't care about that feature anyway) can I just buy either kind off ebay and then use whatever parts I get to fix mine. Also, if I happen to buy a full assembly, can I remove the glass from that one and stick it on mine (or is unlikely that I would be able to remove the glass in this way?). Also can I shop for other models like the 740 or others and it will fit my 940 (keeping in mind that it is only the glass I'm really interested in). Lastly, if mine were heated were there be a visible switch for that inside the car. Thanks.

Hi, both sides on mine has dropped, just glued back.
The plastic mounting can easily be removed.
Insert small flat screwdriver into slot in housing underneat the mirror, there is a kind of wheel with a few notches for the tip of the screwdriver, try to push or twist the wheel ( paralell directin with mirror glass, dont remember which direction), but anyway the turnable circular plastic ring with has tabs locking against corresponding part on mirror back. Once removed easy to see how to remount.

Heated mirror comes on togther with heated rear window but timer turns off mirrors before rearglass heater.

This is the set up for 740/940 up to 1991. Later models are a little bit harder as the plate with the glass is held by several 8? tabs that have to be released with a pick-like tool. The replacement one just snaps on.

All 900s have rear defroster but only some have heated mirrors. The heated mirrors switch is shared with the one for the defrost-- it just has a symbol with the mirror on it and is timed.

Me, I'd try to find one in a boneyard.

If you wish, you can simply glue the new one back on. My 240's driver's side mirror fell off in the driveway and didn't break. So I glued it back on with 3M Marine Adhesive Sealant #5200. Great stuff, it will never come off again! Should work fine on a heated mirror too.

Mine broke into two pieces. I just called some salvage yards but they wanted $65 for the entire assembly so I'll keep looking. I think I can get just the glass for $20 on ebay but I figured at that point I might want to pay just a bit more and get the entire assembly.

Your call. $20 off of Ebay sounds reasonable to me. Then you can glue the glass on if you choose to do so.

Well, does anyone know if the glass dimensions are the same for a heated and non-heated mirror? You'd think they would be the same size, right?

If they are the same I can buy an original heated one and use the glass.

The glass dimensions are the same. If you get the new mirror you will see how it attaches. The black plastic plate that you see where the mirror was mounted just snaps off it you pull on one of the sides, It has some little fingers on the pack thst snap on to a small round mounting. In a nutshell, if you get a new mirror, you will see how it attaches.

Okay, as it turns out I bought off ebay a replacement (glass on the backing) and then I prayed as I snapped/pried off the old one held by those grabber shapped barbs. Then my new one snapped one. All is well now. It also turned out that my original did have a heater and my new one did not but no matter to me.

Jim, would said sealant be advisable for gluing the ~3" lower trim "gravel guards" found on the 240? Also one of my trim pieces has a gentle buckle in it, any tips for flattening it back out?
Thanks!

Matt,

I think the "5200" would work great on your gravel guards! Before I sold my 240 I used it to glue back on 3 of my exterior trim mouldings. I also used it recently to secure a couple of spots on the headliner of my 850's moonroof. Be aware that if you use it it takes about 24-48 hours to completely set up. Secure the gravel guards with clamps or boards etc. Also be aware that once it sets you will never get the glued item back off again. "5200" is designed for marine use in salt and fresh water so it is extremely tough.

Good luck!

"never get it off again" ... I'll have to think about that. I've been considering slathering some rust preventive paint on the lower 2" or so of the door and then gluing the trim back on. WI winters / salt are brutal on the lower 1/3 of the car.
