2" exhaust from VP on an early car 120-130 1961

I have a mid-'61 122s recently converted from B16 to B18 with a 2-pipe exhaust manifold. The car has the wider trans tunnel in anticipation of the B18/M41 that came later that year.

I sourced the 2" exhaust system from Veteranprodukter (made by Skandix, I think), which has a long sausage muffler in the middle, the pipe over the rear axle, and a single larger muffler at the back.

Does anyone have experience hanging this system on a 122 of any vintage? Can the hangers welded to the pipes be used, or does it require a completely custom setup when installing on an early car?

When the original pegs on the undercarriage are close, they are off to one side, which makes hanging with rubber rings difficult.

I put the 2" Simon's system from IPD into my 62 2 door. Thew car has an aftermarket anti sway bar in the back that helped to complicate things. Although I was able to get the system mounted, with some difficulty, the tolerances were too close and the exhaust would rap against the floor pan when ever it wanted to. I had to take the car to a custom exhaust shop and assisted the owner in tweaking the bends in the system to get the clearance needed. We had the system in and out of the car a dozen times before we were done. I was charged $185, fully 2 thirds of the cost of the system. But now it's all good so I'm happy. I am not sure that some remedial work would not have had to be done even if the anti sway bar wasn't there. We used the hangers that came with the system.

Glad you got it sorted. Sounds like you're happy with the system?

Do you remember how you suspended the front muffler? Was there more than one peg on your car, and if so, where was it relative to the pipe?

If your car is indeed a 1961 it may be configured differently from later models because
it probably came with a B16 engine. The B16 exhaust manifold slopes down and to the rear
rather than exhausting straight down like the B18/20.
So the front muffler bracket could indeed be different. Or maybe you just have one of
two original hooks for rubber rings. Some later models had the end of the muffler
held up by 2 rings.

Thanks George.

It was a B16 car. I think I may need to add another mounting point on the undercarriage so I can use 2 donuts to suspend the muffler.

I have the Simons 2" Sport Exhaust on my '67 122S 4dr. with B18 engine. It is mounted to a F.I. exhaust manifold from a B20E engine. No custom set-up is needed. All the original hangars were used except in the rear. The rear holder/bracket that is attached to the rear muffler has a HD rubber strap that is than attached to the right rear bumper bracket. I hope this helps.

Thanks. I suspect there is a difference in the early undercarriage mounting points. At the point where the rear of the first muffler should hang, I have a single peg which is several inches to the left of the pipe's center.

The bracket welded to the rear of that muffler does not logically hang here.

Do you have a rubber donut or a metal clamp at this location?

A rubber donut.

I put the Skandix system on my 1963 122s at my neighborhood mechanic's place. He just put it on in the same manner the stock exhaust was hung. It banged on the underside at every opportunity.

I then took it to an exhaust specialist place and they did it right with some customization. $150 and 1-day turnaround. Works great and gave me more power.
