Oil Leak Tracking Continued - Rear Main Seal Area Photos. 200 1992

Continuing to track down the source of my oil leaks.

I removed this thing that connects to the engine and the transmission so I could peek up towards the rear main seal and flywheel thing.

The plate thingy had oil/grease on the inside of it. The photo is after cleaning it up a bit.

Flywheel thingy with teeth was clean. Looking up towards the rear main seal and carrier it looks kinda oily. But I was thinking there would be oil all over everything. So I'm not sure what to make of it.

There was oil still dripping off of the oil filter too. Up above looks pretty clean. If anything is leaking above, then it must be coming from the head gasket seam I guess.

Driver side of the engine is dry.

Underneath the front of the engine at the crank is dry of oil.

Don't see oil on the water pump area.

Need to track down some UV dye I guess as the next step.

I've got the car running in the driveway and I'll crawl back under it in a while to see if I can find any new fresh traces of oil.

I just figured it out.

Unfortunately oil is leaking out of the head gasket, right near the 2nd cylinder lower exhaust manifold bolt. Cleaned the area a bunch. Turned on the car. Saw the oil leaking out from the head gasket right at that spot. It is running straight down from there and going all over where the oil filter is. mounted. It is oily at that motor mount too and the cross brace under it....

That is where an oilway drilling runs upward in the block from the main block gallery, through a hole in the head gasket and into the head's oil galleries. So you have full system oil pressure right there, very close to the outer surface of the engine. Be nice if it was something easier to fix, but it sure looks like the head gasket is leaking there.

Thanks Bob. I did the head gasket in 2009. Here's a photo from back then. I've circled where the oil is leaking from.

Well, you did a fine job of cleaning up the deck surface there, so it's not your workmanship, it has to be a faulty gasket.
