B18 D-cam timing 444-544

Hello,
I'm wondering where I should set my ignition timing. Its a 65 B-18 020 over pistons with a D-cam, running SU HS6, vac distributor (rebuilt, stock).

The book I have for B18 says 20 degrees BTDC

Reading around on brickboard, the consensus for D-cam seems to be 4-5 degress BTDC

I have a 140 series green book that says pretty much 10 degrees BTDC for the B-20s

To be honest, the car runs best at around 14 BTDC

I want to get the timing right before fine tuning the carbs.

Any thoughts?

    For future reference, it would have been better if you had titled this "ignition timing" rather than "cam timing" which is a lot different and much more involved.
    A gentle suggestion, NOT a rebuke! Hang in there - that is how you learn this stuff!

    Your engine can't use more than 33-34 degrees total advance; without knowing which distributor you have and what advance curve it might offer, the simplest way to get it timed is to rev the engine until the timing stops advancing, set it to 33 while still revved, and call it good. Your timing at idle might be 14 and it might be 22 - this is less important than total advance, and until you get into recurving the dizzy, it kind of doesn't really matter.

    There are a few different vacuum distributors - some offer vacuum advance and others offer vacuum retard. Vac advance is kind of cool; vac retard is kind of useless and is best disabled.

    I wouldn't time it by ear, as you may well end up with more or less advance than is ideal. Similarly, advancing until it pings and then backing off a couple degrees can easily result in overly advanced timing - I've seen engines that don't ping until total advance is up around 40 degrees, which none of these engines will benefit by.

      Great input, thanks everyone. I like the idea of setting timing to 33 with the engine reved. I have a Bosch VJUR 4 BL 33 distributor. I had it professionally rebuilt to the factory curve by Vintage Werks.

      Cameron, are you going to the IPD garage sale? I entered my 544 for the 1965 slot. Now I just need to finish it...

        Yep! I'll see you at ipd. My 122 will be in the 1968 slot, and the 445 in the show across the street.

    I'd say set it by ear , seems like you know where it runs best already. Start there , adjust your carbs for best running and then then fiddle a bit more with the timing for more best. As long as you are not way out of suggested ranges your ear is the the best tool you've got.

      The non vac twin carb distributor would suit your engine better and get it closer to spec. The B18 Green book (and Haynes) is a bit confusing but the B20 one says 10º so 14º is probably very close. Advancing until it pinks and then back until it doesn't is often used but an extra degree or two back is probably best. 1º at the dizzy = 2º of timing so it's a sensitive adjustment.
