Converting a later M46 to cable speedometer drive 200 1979

Hi all,

I searched and found a lot of info on M46 (and slushbox) conversions to M47, but can't seem to find any info on what I want to do. Here is the project in a nutshell: I want to put a 740T drivetrain with M46 into my 242GT. Both cars have an M46 gearbox, but the 740 has electric speedometer drive, while the 242 has a cable drive.

Can I assume that this will involve converting the 740's M46 to cable drive using parts I can pull from the 242's M46, or is there something I am missing? Yes, I know there are lots of other aspects to this conversion, but this is the specific one I am up against a wall on. Any advice would be much appreciated. Cheers!

~Sam

Converting a later M46 to cable speedometer drive 200 1979

    Short version.

If the overdrive is a J or JP type overdrive, then the 740's OD can be adapted to a cable driven system. Not possible with a P type OD.

How to tell apart: on right side just above the pan should be a name plate with OD type designation.

Change requires a rear case and the speedometer pinion driving gear from a cable driven OD.

HArdest part may be finding a speedometer pinion gear that delivers the correct info to the speedometer head. Rear differentials were different for automatics and manual trannys and ther driving gears for the two were also different.

Converting a later M46 to cable speedometer drive 200 1979

      Hi Duane,

Thanks so much for your comments - very, very helpful! The changeover sounds like exactly what I expected. So, I guess that leaves two questions, one which I suspect is fruitless and one which I think I know the answer to but would love your input on:

      1) Is there a chance in hell that Volvo did one thing consistently in their entire history and I can predict what O/D unit is on the car by knowing the build date and other specifications? You can tell I doubt this... the donor 7 is a 1986 744Ti. I can get the owner to look at the case and confirm the O/D model otherwise, which I fully expect.

      2) Assuming that the 7 has a type P O/D, is there anything that would prevent me from installing a J or a P/J so I can use the cable speedometer drive? In other words, is there a major difference between M46 boxes of differing build dates such that an earlier build date O/D won't mate up to a later M46? I have a couple of spare J's in my shop (that could be taken out of context...).

      Thanks so much in advance!

      ~Sam

1986 would have been a J-type unless retrofitted. The great majority of ODs are J. The others came a few years later and are relatively rare.

P-type won't fit on an M46 set up for J-type as the output shafts are different.

Can't offer help but will suggest a caution. The 740 turbo's M46 may have been equipped with a heavier duty version of the overdrive unit. The versions are (IIRC) "P" and "J", and I can't recall which is the HD version.

Just be aware that parts from your 240 OD containing the cable drive may not mate to the turbo OD if it is the HD unit. On parts diagrams the case looks larger.

Perhaps Duane Hoberg (OD Guru) will spot this and chip in.

Thanks - from what I can see, it seems as if I would need to swap the tailshaft housings so that the newer P type O/D would be equipped with the mechanical speedometer drive output of the J type I now have. That would also, if possible, mean that I could split out the drivetrains at the tailshaft housing without touching the driveshafts other than dropping the supports and bearings to move the sensitive bits out of harm's way when I take a crane to the engines.

Just looking at those words makes me grin - I hope that is an option because holy CRAP that would save me a ton of effort.
