I'm trying to sort out an issue on our 1991 Volvo 940 Wagon (16V, non-turbo) which we've had for about 6 years now - it cranks over, but won't start. So far, I have pulled both fuel pumps and confirmed that they work, also that they are pumping when the engine is cranking. I cleaned the distributor and rotor (again, they were just replaced a month ago) and installed new plugs. Based on the trouble code being set, I also replaced the Crank Position Sensor - there were signs of fraying of the cable at the old sensor.

Within the last 20k miles, the plugs, wires, distributor, rotor, wires and ignition module were all replaced - this was done in an effort to cure a stumbling problem (which was successfully resolved back then) - but now I have the mother-of-all-stumbles...in that it won't even start.

I've reviewed the FAQs and forum, too - I do almost all my own vehicle maintenace. Thoughts on what to check next? Thanks for any assistance.

    Are you sure fuel pump is running when you crank, fuel injection relay could be acting up. I had the ignition switch go out on my 93, threw me for a bit, until I somehow stumbled on it/figured it out. Same deal, cranked but no start. Mike

    Does it sound like it's cranking faster then normal? Timing Belt?

      Hi Tony,

      I wouldn't say it's cranking faster than normal, no.

      The timing belt is due to be changed in the next 10k miles or so, but it's still good. I haven't messed around with anything up there, so I wouldn't think it's slipped a tooth or is otherwise off-mark.
