B 18 oil pump 444-544

It appears that my engine will need lots work (bore, align bore, new cam and lifters, etc.) and I don't want to reinstall the old oil pump if there is ANY doubt about it. Specs call for "radial clearance of 0.08 to 0.14 mm", and is this the clearance between a gear tip and the interior wall of the pump? "Flank clearance of 0.15 to 0.35 mm", and I assume this means that this is the allowable spacing between the closest point of approach of the two adjacent gears. Anyone care to confirm or refute? Feasible to rebuild a pump or better to replace?

Many thanks!

Al

For clarification the radial clearance is the clearance between the ends of the teeth of the gears and the housing and the clearance should be 0.003" - 0.0055", aka three to five and a half thou.

Flank clearance is measured between the teeth with a very narrow feeler gauge and they say 0.006" - 0.014" or six to fourteen thou.

Since oil is fairly viscous the pump doesn't need to be too tight.

Pumps available now are B20 spec and these require a bit of cutting to the sump baffle plate on B18 engines. If not done it fouls the pump and can push it sideways. This can/will cause the oil to leak past the O ring and give low oil pressure.

I'd say just get a new one. Compared to the work and parts you'll be spending money on, a new high quality oil pump is cheap.

      Hello,

Unless we have no choice, we ALWAYS install a new oil pump in rebuilt or overhauled engines.

The only time we have not used a new oil pump is when we rebuilt a B16 Volvo engine as we have not been able to find any new oil pumps.

Wow! If YOU can't find'em they must be REALLY well hidden!

          Hello George,

I actually found 3 new B16 oil pumps, but the owner won't sell.

He has 3 brand new B16 blocks and crankshafts and probably more, but he does not want to sell for some reason.

The only thing I was able to buy from him were NOS B16 cam plugs.
