87 240 dl? What to watch out for

There is a 1987 240 dl parked out on the street that my neighbor is interested in. I have owned my 1987 760 turbo for 24 years and know it intimately. i do not know the 240 dl. What questions should we be asking this seller and what "things" should we on the look out for?

Thanks in advance for sharing your knowledge

Brian

87 240 dl? What to watch out for

    Hi Brian,

I have a 87 245 DL auto. I would like to add few more things on your list. You need to look out for...

    A. Side mounted blade style fuse
    B. Anti sway bar; Mine came with a very tiny bar. It was scary when I made my very first high speed turn
    C. Flame trap upgrade kit is plus

    Good luck.

87 240 dl? What to watch out for

Ask the seller "Has the heater blower and/or heater core been replaced yet?"

If the answer is "No" to either one, adjust the offering price downward 20%.

    Uncle Brian,

Use the brickboard search feature and seek like topics for your answers.

    If I replied, I'd write a tome.

Yeah, but the article provides a general direction that's specific to Volvo RWD in-spite of no 240-specific answers. So, you search the massively massive, if behemoth, brickboard archive. You may want to take a look at the turbobricks site.

    http://www.brickboard.com/FAQ/700-900/

You may want to see generic used car buying info from your auto club, like AAA, web sites, and such.

    Hope that helps you.

    cheers,

87 240 dl? What to watch out for

      What this guy said...

Focus on rust, electrical issues and assessing high ticket items:

Does it droop to one side at the rear (TAB's)
Clunking noised while turning... especially going over bumps while turning (lots of possible suspension components)
Apparently that year is a transition year but I think it still had the ignition trigger in the distributor (hall effect sensor) and they are know to have wiring issue.
Coolant in the tranny fluid if an automatic/

87 240 dl? What to watch out for

Thank you. I am going to drive it tomorrow.

Another question. I just finished replacing the wiring harness on my 87, 760 turbo because the sheilding was crackeling and falling off causing all sorts of wonky things AND, I find, from this site, that the material used for that year only was sub par and 87's have a history of cracking sheilding on these wiring harnesss.

SO: is this true for ALL 87's , or just the 760 Turbos.??

        Thanks
        Brian

Depending on who you ask it is all 81's-all 86's...and some 87's. Others say all 80-87's are doomed.

At this age, if it has a wiring harness issue it will be very obvious at the gray firewall plug. I would say the vast majority that are still running well have had the harness replaced by now.
