Belt Alignment is this an issue? 200

I'm getting ready to do my first timimg belt and was going over the car for other parts to order to maximize shipping cost. I was planning to change the various drive belts as well. I'm sure I have more questions when I get into it, but as I was inspecting the belts, I noticed that they all seem slightly out of plane relative to each other. For exaple the Alternator is perceptively torqued inward on the passenger side, the A/C compressor looks torqued inward on the drivers side, and the power steering pump looks like it's pulled downward toward the A/C. Unlike my other cars you can actually see all of the belts at once, an the "twisted" effect looks really odd! Is this "normal" or do I need to plan on doing some accessory bushing replacement to get things to line up?

Helpful hint.....Spring for the urethane bushings for your accessory mounts. The OEM rubber one tend to deflect fairly quickly. New water pump is in order at the same time. You can do this job in one afternoon. There are 10 bushings on your car. 2 for the alternator, 4 for the power steering pump and 4 for the compressor. The rear 2 on the compressor are somewhat a bear to get to, but hang with it.

Mine did. 2 on the outside front and rear, and one inner front and an inner rear that was hiding under the A/C Bracket.

Interesting...but I think you forgot the alternator 'cause that is just the bracket for the PS and AC...right?

On my 1990, there are:

Three on the alternator (two on the pivot and one for the adjuster arm)
Three on the PS pump (same layout)
Three or four on the AC but I am pretty sure it was three, but you picture shows four

I cannot remember how the B21 split-sheave pulley was set up but it was very different. I seem to remember that the York/Tecumseh compressor was hard mounted to the block and on the Alt PS had bushings but it has been a really long time.

7 bushings on the driver side + 2 bushings on the passenger side; I needed 9 total.

3 bushings for the alternator?? I didn't get to it yet but I saw only two bushings...

Two bushings on the pivot bolt and one for the adjuster arm. You cannot see the adjuster arm one until you unbolt the arm from the block...at least I could not.

We had alternators go on two of our 740s at almost exactly 215K - one had worn out brushes, the other seized up.

Great write-up and pics! A little side project to the project, but as long as the radiator shround and belts are already removed, thing looks like the best opportunity to do it! I was having trouble just determining how many bushings the there were. At least they made them all the same!

Hi D-SD

FYI.

7 bushings on the driver side + 2 bushings on the passenger side; You need 9 total.

I didn't feel the vibration issues like some folks were having... I am very happy with polys.

Year of your Volvo

there are many other "side projects" that open up once you strip the front end down.

fer instance...how old is your water pump...with everything off it's so much easier to replace....what's the cost of that Xtra part when you think of yr time

all the hoses....arg...timing belt tensioner....crank..intermed...cam seals...valve adjustment...cam cover gasket...thermostat...rebuild alternator, bearings, brushes.(yeh you need it esp if the Belts were mis-aligned)

think...next time 60K later...you can just replace the timing belt cause you've done the rest.

oh yeh Motor mts...easy with the alt and the oil filter off....tranny mt.

should take only about a very long weekend.

Thanks! It's an '86 245, 218,000 miles. When my wife drove the car for 12 years, It was maintained pretty regularly by an independant one-man-shop Volvo specialist. The guy was awesome, he knew these cars inside and out and seemed to have a really good practical sense of repair, priority and cost. Later, when my wife was thinking about buying something more "modern" (ha ha) like a used 760, and a few years later, a used 850, she asked him to do a pre-purchase inspection...He almost became distrought "what hapened to your 240?", "Why would you want that?" "That is going to be much more difficult and costly to maintain!" Unfortunately, he had some health issues and had to close his shop. My wife eventually did buy something more modern- a Japanese/Ford/Austrailian cluster F. I do not enjoy woking on at all and I'll leave it at that. She cleaned up the 240 for me to sell, but I just couldn't part with it! Too handy to run to home depot, or take the dogs to the beach, or leave at the airport during the week without worry of theft or vandelism or even door dings! Six years later, I have a 17 year old son who is starting to drive. It is the EASIEST car to learn on, manuver and park. It has great visibilty, and carries his windsurf gear, surfboard and mountain bike with ease! It's actually "cool"!

It's had very little mainentaince during those 6 years, but also only accumulated less than 5,000 miles during that time. So I'm trying to get the maintenance up to date and into some kind of "predictable" state. I'm also trying to get him involved in the process in every way I can. I think it will be a great learning exerience for both of us. That's my story and some back history.

The water pump is a good suggestion. I was debating that one. I have a repair invoice from 1996(about 70,000 miles) when the radiator and hoses were last replaced. It also indicates that the water pump was bearing noisy - "R&R water pump" So it was apparently serviced , but possibly original.

The timing belt is actually on track at 30,000 miles and the seals and tensioner were replaced last time.

Alternator brushes... Urg! Something else to think about!

Thanks again!
