1990 740 Turbo - exhaust manifold coupling gasket..? 700

Hi,

My exhaust manifold connects to a coupling (not sure if that is the right terminology) which then connects to the main exhaust header and turbo.

I have some exhaust escaping at the join between the exhaust manifold and the coupling. Not where the manifold joins the engine head, but where the single port of the exhaust manifold joins the coupling which then joins the header pipe and then down to the catalytic converter.

My question is I cannot find for sale the gasket that must be between the manifold and coupling. What do I need to replace? (Not sure if coupling is the right word for this part.)

Thanks,

Dean

There is no gasket where the pipe meets the turbo, its a pressure fit.
They make some exhaust sealent thats sold at local auto stores, ive never used it myself but ive seen it used.
Ive had much trouble getting that pipe sealed, with a lot of patiance it will can done.

That's the part I was thinking of. Can be found at any auto store, as long as you know exhaust diameter. I believe turbo is 2.25" exhaust, but confirm independently.

The ring is probably the one that goes betweet the CAT and the CAT BACK.

I could be wrong but I don't think so. I am going to attach an image. The two pieces that join together are not pipes but the manifold and the coupling and to me it is a flat gasket. See the image. See the black carbon exhaust leaking from the join of these two parts?

If memory serves, no gasket there. Guys over at turbobricks explained as the exhaust heats up, it seals. Initial starts it does leak a little. Been running mine like that for over 10yrs.

Yes you are right it does make a full seal after warming up. It was just the first time I noticed it, or it got a little noisier, so I thought I needed a gasket of some type. Thanks for the clarification.

Oh yes, no gasket there. But don't simply re-tighten nuts. Loosen them all and startover. Re-tighten nuts *evenly* as it is easy to get make slightly skewed connection between the header and down pipe.

I think I did mine from underneath to be able to see the exposed thread length of the third bolt.
