Can I use a OD relay for fog light relay? 200 1986

I have a pair of foglights that I want to use. Can I use a(white) manual OD relay as the power transfer relay? It has the correct prongs on the bottom to tie into, but doesn't say what the amp rating is. Thanks.

Found a fog light relay from a S70 in my spare parts bin, hooked it up and now all is working just fine. Thanks guys.

If you are looking for the function of the OD relay (boots up in energized mode, alternate action from a button) then use it, but add a standard mechanical relay to handle the load of the fog lamps. As Volvodad points out, the automatic OD's electronic relay has a very thin circuit board trace in its contact path, sometimes made known to those who try to cure a frayed solenoid wire with a bigger fuse. The relay itself (inside) is the same as any other 30A automotive relay.

Like aleekat says, go with what Volvo use in later cars with fog lights - a simple Bosch-type 20/30 Amp relay.

Supposedly, the OD solenoid draws about 1-2 Amps, so if the electronic OD relay was designed for that plus a reasonable overload factor, it may not last long handling the 9 Amps of a pair of fog lamps.

I would just buy a new bosch relay, 30amps. They're only about $10.
