240 dies and won't restart

My 1988 240DL Wagon (320K miles) dies occasionally and won't restart.

This usually happens idling (in gear) at a stopsign or light. It might be happening just when I take off from the stop.

Engine dies hard, not sputtering to a stop. Trying to start just cranks and cranks....not a sign of life. Then after 30sec to maybe 5min, another starting attempt and it just fires up.

My local shop is going to try replacing some of the inexpensive items like the fuel pump relay.

Any thoughts? Any advice on what to check the next time it dies?

Thanks....Lyle

I would also look at the crankshaft speed sensor, Located above transmission bell housing and firewall in engine bay. Mine was cracked slightly which caused an intermittant start on my car.

Good question. I assume they can't make it quit, and all looks healthy in the doctor's office.

Taking care of the most common causes, tempered with economy, is the correct approach to an intermittent that won't show itself. Start with the 25A fuse holder and its red wire connections under the hood, and the fuel injection relay above the passenger's feet (as they did) and have them be sure the tank pump is operating. Finally, an inspection of the small wires to the Hall effect sensor (distributor) is worth the trouble.

Most try to say, if it happens again, watch to see if the tach needle moves when cranking. The idea is to divide the problem between spark and fuel. But (1) the tach may not respond to the low cranking rpm and (2) your car may not be equipped with a tachometer.

Well, maybe not the most economical or even successful approach, but my shop replaced the main pump, relay, and filter. Their theory, which sounded good, was that I had received my money's-worth from the original fuel pump (320K miles), and it was better than spending shop time on diagnosis.

Still, it could be a spark issue.

Thanks to all, and I'll update the thread if it happens again.

how is your gas mileage? Has it gone way down recently? Wondering if your Fuel Pressure Regulator is dying. Take off the front hose of the Regulator and see if it is wet with gas.

If all they are going to do is replace parts with no diagnostics, it will get expensive. Next time it doesn't start, check for spark. If you got spark, then suspect fuel system. If no spark, suspect ignition system.
