Trim clips 200

Needed some trim clips to reattach a door trim. This is the narrow trim that runs just under the door handles, from front fender lights to rear tail lights. Did a Google search and found OEM part number 1372059. Called a local Volvo dealership and they confirmed that part number. These are white and have a "bullet" end to snap into the body and a flat end to snap into the trim track. Ordered some. Dead on arrival. Item is gray, bullet end has what looks like a rubber washer around its neck and the track end is too narrow so it won't secure to track. Dealership reconfirmed part number.

Any one experience this and found a better part number?

For the fun of Volvos,
Mike

For what year volvo? If it is for your 92 then the part number is correct. The newer ones are grey. You will have to slide them onto the trim then turn them a 1/4 turn to lock them in place.

My Volvo is a '92. The trim is located just below the door handles. This trim is approximately 1-1/8" wide or 28mm. The trim is all black with no visible chrome.

Based upon the responses from my original post, I called back to the dealership. They still have the trim clips that I had ordered then rejected. I told them that I wanted to reopen that order. When these clips reach me through the mail, I'll try them out and let you know. I think these new ones (1372059) were meant to attach to the trim by twisting the clip 90 degrees in the metal track. Each clip has what appears to be a rubber washer around the neck of the "bullet" that is inserted in the door body hole. That's also different from the original trim clip.

Perhaps Volvo has changed the plastic from the original, and thus the color from white to gray. The older clips may seem to weaken with age and are likely easier to fail when they become more brittle.

The 92 all black trim uses the same clip 1372059. I bought a bag of the grey ones you mentioned, maybe 50 pcs. on ebay for little money. Aftermarket but work fine!

Received my order of the gray clips (Volvo OEM 1372059). Each clip comes with a little black foam washer over the "bullet". Did yours? I'm thinking that this washer is removed just before installing the door trim. Is that how you understood the installation? Looks like the clip is inserted in the trim track and twisted to engage the track. I wonder if the clips will then slip within the track to get the precise position to mate up with the body panel holes.

Trim piece is now attached to the car with the new clips. Removed the retrograde left by the broken pieces of the old clips. Tough old clips. Left the foam washers on. I could see how the new clips have designed the purposeful quarter turn needed to snap the clips into the tracks. Used tape to mark on the outside of the trim about where the clips should be slid to match with the body panel holes. Trim nicely snapped onto the body panels.

              Hey Mike,

              Thank you for this post.

Several times in the past I've been puzzled by that trim. The puzzlement appears when I try to replace broken clips with those I've carefully removed in the junkyard. It seems I remember being able to remove the rubbery ends of the trim to gain access and slide out the old clips and slide in the new, but now I realize that memory probably stems from a much older (83-84) 240, because all the 90's cars seem to have that rubber end molded right onto the trim. I ruin it removing it.

Well, your description of the "new" clips make it obvious to me what I should be doing. The clips are not only "new" but they are specifically "replacement" or "service" parts, meant only for aftermarket use, given the originals cannot be installed without the risk of ruining the trim.

              Thank you!

I bought these aftermarket clips on ebay, a bag full for little money. Not all of them had the foam washer.

Leave the foam washer on, helps in sealing. The clips will slide in the tracks onced installed but I would hold the trim to the door and then mark with tape or something where the holes are. This way you can install the clip in the right spot on the track.

I would guess the foam washer may be to seal the hole and make it water tight?

As I recall, when you insert the clip and give it a quarter turn it snaps into place.
            give it a try!

The trim clips you got are for the later wider belt line trim, the chrome with black. The trim clip you want is for the narrow stainless belt line moulding.
part number is 1247708. may or may not have a -9 after the number. Usually comes in a bag of 16 pcs.

his signature says its a 92... wouldn't that be the later style trim black with chrome inlay? I'm needing to reinstall some trim so I'm very interested in this thread.

I have the black and chrome trim.

      Thanks,
      Matt

I did as you suggested and looked into IPSUSA as a source for this trim clip. They had pictured a trim clip that matched what I had ordered from the dealership, referencing it to the Volvo p/n 1372059. I decided not to place an order yet from them.
