Bad stumble 120-130 1965

Hello everyone! Any ideas on a stumble occurring just off the idle stops both on acceleration AND deceleration. Timing, dwell OK, and timing seems to be advancing properly. Stock engine with rebuilt SU carbs. New fuel filter downstream of the fuel pump. Doesn`t do it all the time. More pronounced when engine not fully warmed up; lean? OK at higher RPMs.

Does this sound like carbs or ignition? I`m going to check valve clearance ASAP.
Car has run well for years.

Many thanks!

    Bad stumble corrected! 120-130 1965

This turned out to be a crumbled distributor rotor. When I removed the rotor, it fell into 3 pieces! I`m amazed the car ran at all. I checked valve clearances and only 3 or 4 needed minor adjustment. I adjusted timing to about 15 degrees BTDC (according to the timing light) and it is running well. It seemed a little sluggish at 10 degrees BTDC. I`ve got a B18D motor.

Thanks to everyone for all your help.

    Mike

Yeah, you've got to have all the parts in there. I am also surprised that it didn't self destruct from the centrifical force at the higher revs. Amazes me sometimes what will hold together and what won't.

    Running lean a definite possibility.

Don't rule out ignition timing though. A timing light gets you in the ball park, fine tuning is best done by ear, and how she runs in my experience.

How does it do if you pull the choke a bit?
If that makes it better, it is too LEAN.
Probably not related to valve lash (but it's always good to check it.)
Doesn't sound like an ignition problem either.
Worse when cold almost always means lean mixture.

Man, sure is good to hear from vintage Volvo folks. Haven`t been on the board much lately. All good suggestions. I had a weak ignition coil on a Fiat 128 kinda act like this years ago. A Bosch Blue eliminated the problem, but this is unique in that it will sometimes occur coming back through the throttle travel spot on decel: i.e. no load on the engine.

She`s not to lean at idle for sure. The carbs were rebuilt by Z-Therapy and have good throttle shaft bushings. I`m beginning to wonder about a vacuum leak or intake manifold leak somewhere. I haven`t checked float levels or debris in float bowls for a while either, but I run inline filter all the time. Dashpot oil level and type is good.

Several of these old Volvos I've had, ignition timing was seasonal thing. In winter, for easy starting and cold running. In summer, to avoid knock and ping.

Yeah, I know it ain't right. And it wasn't all cars. But with some, that's just what the motor liked, and it only takes a half minute to twist that distributor clockwise a couple degrees. You can always put it back.

In fact, I used to keep that adjustment bolt slightly loose.. tight enough that timing wouldn't change on its own, but just loose enough that I could make quick adjustments... often times, while waiting for red lights to turn green (as a pizza driver, I knew the duration of red for every light in town)

George's suggestion first... if it goes away when you pull the choke a tad, it's lean.

Maybe you don't have the ideal needles in your carbs. All needles are going to be about the same diameter at idle, but if yours are too fat at a half inch down, that'd cause a lean mixture when you step on the gas. Maybe needles with a greater taper would work. The folks at Z-therapy should be able help in sorting that out. I've never had them do any work for me, but I've bought parts from them, and always felt them to be be most helpful.
