544 ignition switch short 444-544

Good afternoon,
'65 544. After installing the battery, it seems that when the key is in any position except off, my original ignition switch sends power to the number 50 (top) terminal (thin green wire to the starter solenoid).

It sends more power (less resistance) in the momentary start position.

This means the starter always turns when the key is on (slow in the on, or acc position, regular speed in the start position).

Does this mean I need a new ignition switch? I have tried cleaning the switch with electra-motive (PCE) to no avail.

If a new switch is in order, does anyone have a good used one they want to sell? I have a new coil and new ignition lock cylinder with key.

Alternatively, is there a good 4-position aftermarket ignition switch you would recommend?

THANK YOU!
Mike

I had to order a new ignition switch for mine, as it did almost the same thing you're describing. I went with a generic (made in the USA though) ignition switch. Can't remember if I got it off ebay or from Vintage Auto Garage.com, or perhaps sherco-auto.com.

I had also purchased a new ignition key cylinder (with genuine Volvo keys) only to find my switch was fried. I went the cheap route with an aftermarket ign switch (with crappy little keys) but installed a starter button to compensate for that.

How'd you make out with this?

Hello, thanks for the response. It seems the switch is shot, so in the short term I'll install a 3-position generic ignition switch until I can find a good used one. Its good to know that these switches do wear out, as I think you and I had the same type of switch failure.
Thanks again, Mike
