if I need to be idling in traffic it seems fine as long as it is in drive , when it idles in neutral the check engine light comes on...it seems to idle with a lope when in neutral...but more smooth when in gear...any suggestions? Thank you, Kris

    My 93 used to do that same thing, and I found that it was low ocatane gas that would trigger the check engine light after a few minutes idling. I was always filling up at one station, but once I changed to another station, I have not had it come on since. the OBD did throw a code, however (oxy sensor) but once I reset and changed gas stations, the car has not had the problem again. Just my .02

    The idle is controlled by the idles air control valve, when was the last time this was cleaned and the throttle body?

      I have not cleaned the throttle body so most likely it has never been cleaned and I rebooted the computer before I did the tests ....oops?

        If the check engine light comes on again check the codes from socket six.

        Other posts have mention a service light.
        Has the service light, if it has one, ever been reset by you or is that light burned out? I ask all of this as I am not familiar with the 89 instrument cluster but I am pretty sure you know the difference.

        OK,so you need to drive it around and see if anything shows up. In the mean time clean the throttle body, IAC valve and all the vacuum fittings on the intake side.

    I checked the codes, both tests according to the procedure I followed in my Bentley manual were 1-1-1 indicating all functions were OK. Kris

    If you have a check eninge light, you have codes. Pull them and report back.
