water leak- 900

So even with the sunroof taped shut, still have water coming in the sunroof, how is this possible? Roof drains are clear ( water pours out each if water is poured directly in each corner). I suspect roof seal was failing, carefully taped the roof shut till spring- but still have water dripping into the car. Car does NOT have roof racks. I also sealed the rear seam screws near the tailgate- but by the ammount of water, its must be coming in else where- but where???

thanks,

andrew

    Dear volbro245,

Hope you're well. I don't have a sunroof, for fear of the situation you describe.

Where do you find the water? Is the headliner wet? Or, does water pool on the floor? If on the floor, in the front (footwells) or just in front of the back seats or in the cargo space?

Does water come in, when the car is parked? Or, does water come in only when the car is driven?

If the water seems to come in from the roof, where do you see the water dripping? Is it near to, or far from, the sunroof? If so, what is the specific location (e.g., the headliner, near the upper corner of the windshield on the passenger side of the car).

Answers to these questions will help to diagnose the problem.

    Yours faithfully,

    Spook

Spook- good to hear from you.

The water leaks from the front of the sunroof.onto the driver/seat. The headliner is not soaked, but wet near the corner where it has leaked. Seems worse when the car is parked up hill.

      Thanks,

      Andrew

          Hi all,
We had the windshield replaced by Safelite because water was streaming down the inside of the glass. that stopped that issue. water tends to leak when the car lurches fwd during breaking and seems to be pooling farther back. i've also had it leak just above the drivers door in the split between the plastic paneling. i also had this problem from time to time on my 86 245 sans sunroof. the water is clean and clear, not rusty or grimy and is really limited to the edge of drivers side sunroof and sometimes door panel.

            Dear volbro245,

Hope you're well. The leak is at the top of the windshield. The tip-off: the leak is worse, when the car points uphill and during braking. Water flows down-hill (if the gravity bill has been paid). Depending on the angle, turns, etc., the incoming water either drips onto the driver's seat, or - if the car leans to one side - near the door panel.

It would help matters, if the sunroof could be put into good working (and water-right) condition. That removes the sunroof as a potential source of trouble.

Find someone deeply expert in installing windshields, and have them examine yours. It may only take a dab of sealant, to cure this problem. The trick is to know where to apply the dab of sealant.

I'd not apply sealant on the exterior of the moldings surrounding the windshield. Those moldings are cosmetic: the seal that matters is underneath the moldings. Removing the moldings requires care: they are not cheap to replace.

            Hope this helps.

            Yours faithfully,

            Spook
