1994 staal and dead en route 900

1994 Regina, 256000 miles
Daughter commuting home in a snowstorm, car stalled dash lights on, voltage gauge 11.5 volts, no restart. Daughter called Dad, Dad called for tow.

Car has had intermittent charging dilemmas. I installed a known and tested good alternator and jumped car, no start. Checked for fuel pump buzz, nothing, checked for spark at plug, no spark.

I checked the timing belt for cam movement, movement. Newer crank sensor within 2 yrs. It has gas. Checked fuses and replaced fuel pump relay. Replaced Radio suppression relay, no change.

Any thoughts appreciated before a tow to mechanic on Thurs.
Rick

Check my recent threads regarding my own personal charging issues.

Although in your case it sounds like the engine is cranking but not firing.

Thank you all. My mechanic ( he's also a friend) had a cancellation today so he came up and towed it to his garage. Dead fuel pump. He connected 12 volts direct and nothing.

Any suggestions as to good brands to buy or avoid. I'll also get the sock and a new filter anything needed? o ring?

Thanks again for all the replies

PS i did check for CE codes nothing found.

You said no spark and no fuel. Mmmmmm. You would see spark with a dead pump.

Ok, Volvo intake pump 100 to 150k miles and I forgot the price. Check Tasca. Any aftermarket, ~75k and a much lower cost. Check FCP Groton.

Tom

Thanks javalion, I did not see spark with noid in pace my mechanic saw it but he said it was weak when he did it. I also reviewed the archives and Tasca was recommended. Thanks again.

Borrow a 'noid light at AutoZone to see if the injectors are pulsing. If not, try cleaning the power stage connection in the Regina coil assembly. Seems to me there are some posts on that somewhere on Brickboard...

Good luck!

So the OP can follow your thread:

How to clean the Rex 1 power stage/coil.
Separate the two halves of the coil/power stage box, clean foil spring contacts and opposite side contacts, fine sandpaper or other fine abrasive. Debate is on if dielectric grease or heat sink paste or nothing should be used between contacts. Ok to use nothing.

Check corrosion at the plug-in connection.

Directly from lucid's poetry links I posted.

1) During starter cranking, the Crank Position Sensor sends timing pulses to Ignition Control Unit (ICU)

2-a) The ICU propagates these timing pulses to the Power Stage (aka Ignition Amplifier) to initiate spark at the coil. (Rex/Regina or LH2.4/EZ 116)

if 2a fails due to a bad Power Stage/Amplifier, there will be a no-start with gas-wet plugs.

"Checked for fuel pump buzz, nothing, checked for spark at plug, no spark"

No pump, no spark, is your fuel injection relay working?

Mike

Dear ricko,

Hope you're well. When was the harmonic balancer (aka crank pulley) changed? This pulley has two steel sections - inner and outer - joined by a rubber core. If the rubber core fails, the center of the pulley spins, but the outer section moves only a little. As a result, the alternator does not charge, the water pump moves little water, and the power steering does not work effectively. To check the pulley, take white-out and draw a line from the center (near the crank bolt's head) to the outer rim. If, when the engine runs, the white line separates into two segments, that no longer align, the pulley has failed.

It is also possible that the battery cables have corroded inside the insulation jacket. As a result, the alternator runs, but does not charge the battery. Looks for signs of corrosion on the cable, near the battery terminals.

Another thing to check/clean are the contacts on the alternator, especially that for the thin red wire. This wire goes to the alternator lamp on the instrument cluster. If that lamp fails, or the wire is broken, or the connection(s) is/are corroded, the alternator does not receive the current required to trigger the charging process.

Hope some of these suggestions are useful.

Yours faithfully,

Spook

Poetry by lucid, start run sequence:

Start-up Sequence

Volvo 940 No start....

"Checked for fuel pump buzz, nothing, checked for spark at plug, no spark."

No spark signal, therefore no fuel is a basic statement but I cannot come close to lucid's knowledge. Start with the CPS. Read his posts. Search "RWD - No Start lucid" for more if you want to. I might have the license to reference his posts because he used my quarter voltage regulator photo.

Basic stuff first, pull codes and and look for ignition/spark codes.

volvowiringdiagrams.com has some trouble shooting guides.

Post back on progress, questions.

Tom
