Dear ricko,
Hope you're well. When was the harmonic balancer (aka crank pulley) changed? This pulley has two steel sections - inner and outer - joined by a rubber core. If the rubber core fails, the center of the pulley spins, but the outer section moves only a little. As a result, the alternator does not charge, the water pump moves little water, and the power steering does not work effectively. To check the pulley, take white-out and draw a line from the center (near the crank bolt's head) to the outer rim. If, when the engine runs, the white line separates into two segments, that no longer align, the pulley has failed.
It is also possible that the battery cables have corroded inside the insulation jacket. As a result, the alternator runs, but does not charge the battery. Looks for signs of corrosion on the cable, near the battery terminals.
Another thing to check/clean are the contacts on the alternator, especially that for the thin red wire. This wire goes to the alternator lamp on the instrument cluster. If that lamp fails, or the wire is broken, or the connection(s) is/are corroded, the alternator does not receive the current required to trigger the charging process.
Hope some of these suggestions are useful.
Yours faithfully,
Spook
