Steering Rack - Swap ZF for cam? 700 1991

Looking through the 700 archives I seem to get conflicting answers. I thought they could swap, when I call Volvo dealer to replace a return hose, he tells me there are 2 different hoses. I already have the rack from Jorgen Auto, they tell me they swap, when I ask a mechanic, he says no. Is there anyone there who has done this or knows for sure? Thanks.

Steering Rack - Swap ZF for cam? 700 1991

I swapped from Koyo to Cam. I learned that the hoses are different only for the Koyo, due to the opposite placement of the high and return hoses. The high pressure I got from Rock Auto for $27. The return hose was slightly different and I bent it to fit. The ZF fits directly I believe, as the hoses are the same. The inner tie rod may be different but if swapping the whole unit out to or including the outer tie rod end, it should bolt in.

Steering Rack - Swap ZF for cam? 700 1991

I replaced mine with a ZF out of an '87 from a junk yard a year and a half ago. No problems.

Steering Rack - Swap ZF for cam -answered 700 1991

Just talked to Jorgen Automotive who assure me these swap. The two different return hoses must have to do with something other than rack.

I used Jorgen for my '91 780. First came the zf, instead of the cam unit that was on it originally. I had nothing but grief, there was a nasty hard spot that had me replacing the u-joint steering shaft. Not that. They sent me a cam unit, took a little while - they didn't have the cam on the shelf. Installed the cam unit - smooth like new steering. so - swapping? if you have a cam, stick with a cam. don't invite steering rack wierdness. Jorgen replaced the bad inner tie rod under warranty after one year - good company - very good service. good luck.

Steering Rack - Swap ZF for cam -Reason for problem? 700 1991

Do you know why there was a problem - what caused the "weirdness"?

Steering Rack - Swap ZF for cam -Reason for problem? 700 1991

There was a hard binding at 9 and 3 on the steering wheel. Unexplained as to why it ocurred, it just did. I spent time & money on a new steering shaft u-joint- that wasn't at fault. Jorgen had no explanation. Could have just been my bad luck. But as soon as I put the replacement Cam style in, I had like new steering. Still do. So- you can swap zf with cam. All depends on how it works out once it is in. Jorgen is very good about information and warranty. good luck.

Steering Rack - Swap ZF for cam -answered - wait not so fast - anyone know? 700 1991

When I called the Volvo dealership about the RETURN hose, he said it depended on the rack (I need to replace mine because it's badly rusted). The guy said the pressure hose is the same for either rack. So who would want to trade out a $80 hose (dealer price) when they change a $200 rack? I saw a Gates return hose online for $30 that said it fit ZF rack and Regina. So I'm getting conflicting accounts, I guess if the only difference when swapping is the return hose and I have to replace mine I'm OK, but Jorgen Auto swears they can swap out and they have been in business a long time.
