This post got me thinking about an issue w/my car

http://www.brickboard.com/RWD/volvo/1555290/220/240/260/280/clutch_cable_broken_repair_advice_1985_240.html

I have what I think is a worn out clutch in one of my bricks. With the clutch pedal pressed to the floor, the car rolls forward at 3 or 4 mph in 1st gear unless I keep my foot on the brake. Shifting is also difficult. The cable cannot be adjusted at this point and the engagement point (if it still has one) is pretty much right off the floorboard.

But, the clutch does not slip. The other day I tried this: Car in 3rd gear at about 15 mph, full throttle acceleration up to 60 mph before shifting into 4th. Clutch did not slip at all.

So, could the cable be binding? I had a few break on me less than a year apart and they ended up soldering the ball to the back of the clutch cable. Or could the problem be a bad release bearing? It seems like the clutch itself is OK. I would think that a truly worn out clutch would slip like mad, especially under the conditions of my 3rd gear test.

Soldering the ball to the back of the clutch cable=welding the ball to the back of the clutch pedal.

This is what you DID or what you are proposing? Soldering will do less damage to the
cable.
It could also be that your release fork is bending. You may be able to put some
spacers in to give more adjustment, either at the firewall or at the lower end.

As George suggested--the clutch fork may be bending---it happens---but my bet is on firewall flex. Where the cable goes through the firewall it is not uncommon for 240's to develop cracks. The fix can range from proper welding to simply adding large washer(s) or a combination of both to reinforce the area. Looking doesn't always show the problem--the cracks are under the cable flange in the beginning. Have an assistant step on the clutch pedal as you observe the firewall from under the hood. Any flex is a problem. -- Dave
