Hitch for towing 200

I have a 1991 Volvo 240 automatic sedan with 143,000 miles. I'm wondering what type of hitch I should get for it. I want to be able to attach a uhaul to move my stuff around if necessary. Would a 3500lb hitch be enough? I've seen a couple on ebay and one on FCPgroton.

Are these pretty easy to install?

Thanks for your help,

Jimmy

    Hitch for towing 200

I picked up a hitch at the junk yard for $25 and included the wiring harness. Took it off of a 240. It was a uhaul branded hitch with 6 bolts holding it on.

It was rated for 3500 lbs. but is only an 1 1/4" mount. I'd probably limit the weight to 2k pounds and 200lb. Tongue weight.

Btw...I've been towing all sorts of things (from utility trailers to sailboats, to heavy equipment.

    Good luck!

    Hitch for towing 200

Have U-haul do it for you. They use a quality Drawtite hidden hitch and usually have pretty reasonable installation. You rear valance does have to be modified and a heat shield either modified of replaced with most hitches.

The best hitch I have found was the Volvo OEM hitch but they are getting harder to find. After that is the Drawtite with all others way down the list.

Your car is not rated for more that 3500# towing so no one will even make a hitch designed for more load.

FYI, you also need a wiring kit that is powered to avoid constantly tripping the bulb failure warning light.

Be very aware of how you load your trailer. The Volvo Engine, transmission and brakes are certainly up to the tasks of towing but the rear suspension is marginal...the 300# tongue weight is absolutely a max if you are carrying anything else int he car like luggage or a passenger.
