checking diodes in voltage regulator ? 200 1987

Is there a way to check the diodes in the alternator mounted voltage regulator ? One of the brushes was worn down to 5/32" ( 0.156") but I don't want to replace the brushes if one of the diodes is bad.

The orginal problem was no charge, no warning lights (except oil pressure). Replacing the VR/brush assembly solved the problem.

Thanks

Greg

The diodes are not in the voltage regulator, they are in the alternator.
So go ahead and replace the brush, both of them in fact, they are cheap, but do require soldering (and unsoldering) skills to remove and install.

If you search online, or maybe in the FAQ, you should find a test procedure for the diodes. The typical symptom is flickering lights caused by the high ripple on the DC output.

Interesting. The diodes are probably fine since the alternator works and puts out decent DC voltage. Is there any way to check the regulators or don't they ever go bad ?

        The regulators do go bad.
There could be a way of checking them off the alternator, but I check them by installing them and then check the voltage at the battery.
I regard them as fairly cheap, so I'd just get a new one.
Replacing the brushes is definately worth it if you are willing to spend the time and can solder.
