Are 240's exhaust valves now rumored to be filled with gold? 200

:)

Some of you might remember me here, I have been out of Volvo's for a couple of years now since I traded in my 99 S70 GLT (many features and feel of which I miss greatly actually).

Looking for a "winter" car now and would like to have the chance to drive a Volvo again, if even for nostalgia's sake.

I'm aiming at the $3-5k range and ran across some 240's in that range, and was surprised, since I expected they'd be much less. Sure enough, a couple of '93's had book value in the $1500 range, yet sellers were firm on not going below $3k. Tsup whiddat? Are they considered "collectible" now?

between supply and demand and cult status 200

the quantity of real low mileage...under 150k and merely acceptable mileage under 210k .....in rust free condition with a decent interior has shrunk dramatically.

the cult status of these cars ensures trend followers will want them as much as hardcore 240 fans.

add it all up and you're look at 2800 and up for anything which qualifies as real nice.

if you can live with 250k miles and UP you can find them here in new england for 1200 and less.

You can still buy a beater for well under $1000; there are a lot of beaters left. What is really hard to find is a rust free 240 without a trashed interior, that hasn't suffered at the hands of an idiot (e.g. one who let it run dry of oil, coolant, etc.).

I don't know where in the country you are, but I recently bought an '87 for 500. Sure, it needed a new exhaust, new trailing arm bushings, new motor mounts, and a hose clamp on the hose installed for the heater core intake, but right now I'm about $1100 into it (including titling/registration/tax), though I still have to install those damn trailing arm bushings.

If you're not driving it "like its stolen," are you really driving?

Hi,

I think the price all depends on what area of the country you are in. Here in PA decent condition ones run from a couple hundred $ to $3,000 usually.

I live in SoCal.
Last year I paid $750 for an 86 240 (standard trans)
I paid $1500 for an 87 740 and have this nagging feeling I screwed my self.
OTOH I have seen 240's that two or three years ago would have gone for $500-$1000 going for twice that.
I'm looking for a 75 164E with a bad trans (cause I have a new one) and there are just none to be had, that aren't just laughable for the asking price.
I have an 82 240 with K-Jet, that I have been offered $1000 for and it doesn't run (yet).
In the L.A. area there are reportedly some minor rich people buying them like pork belly futures, driving the prices up.
I'm looking for the market to bubble out

Considering some of Volvo markups, the valves may cost like gold. If they are filled with anything it would be a concoction of sodium salts. These are used in racing engines and Volvo may have put them in their high performance/turbo engines.

If you had things in your pantry that you savored down to the last one, say a decent wine, that is popular among certain connoisseurs, that’s not made anymore and would you just want to give it up to a Blue Book price listing that is built upon the premise of scraping out cars to sell more new ones?

There comes a time for “certain cars” and “certain years” in that book that it gets thrown over or out of the trunk and the “rare car” auction prices start kicking in. Hard to say where 240's may end up!

A car, we all know is for the most part is a bad investment because they were not intended to be an investment. These things are not static items to be just looked at, as they wear out!
To think otherwise is foolish, but there is a point where you should at least get back some of the cost to maintain it, all those years! IMHO

The idea of perfect, religion and the moments of nostalgia exist only in the minds of humans.
Money is used as a scale to measure that anxiety of universal thought between buyers and sellers.

Nice 240's are becoming rare so price ^. Pristine ones and the later years are worth something, particularly the 1993's as they are the last year. The 91's and 92's are a better value though. 740's and 940's are a real bargain. They are a lot cheaper than 240's usually. You can buy a decent 740 for a song...

Collectible yes, classic no. Gold exhaust valves - who knows??
