rough idling 200 1993

1993 245 w/ 214k miles.

Just started this weird rough idling thing; here's how it goes. When you first crank the car, and if its cold outside, it runs smooth,...but once the engine gets hotter, it begins idling rough. The engine doesn't run rough at cruising speeds, but it really shakes while idling at stop signs, red lights, etc. There's no check engine light on, but I'm going to check the codes anyway.

I don't know where to start. I've replaced the air mass meter once...this new rough idling thing is a different symptom than with the AMM. If it were the plug wires, coil wire, etc, then the rough idling would always occur,..not just when the engine got hot. Could it be the air box valve thing? Any suggestions are much appreciated. I've got to get this fixed today.

The ignition amplifier, attached to the inner fender beside the battery, can also cause firing problems when it heats up.

If initially the car idles fine when cold, but after a while the idle roughens, I think putting an ice cube against the IA, could help isolate it as the problem.

Check your wires anyway, my '85 245 had the same symptoms....thought tit was fuel pump related but was 2 broken plug wires. Idled and revved fine...but driving was horrible....bucking, missing, etc.

Replacing plug wires (and plugs) today.

    Good luck with yours.

first suspect would be vac leak or intake leak but
yes check plug wire for arc marks etc.-also typical plug/rotor/cap check
it may seem odd but i have seen these items cause a poor warm idle
i typically spray a small amount of intake cleaner between where the
intake and head meet, if it changes, replace the intake gasket
also check/clean iac valve maybe even flame trap/nipple

maybe even clean the throttle body and check/adjust throttle switch

every 15k my 90 with 345000 gets a new flame trap, throttle body and iac cleaned,
throttle position switch adjusted, and plugs cleaned or replaced
wires checked, so far no idle issues-knock on wood

      GOOD LUCK, POST BACK!

Check for vac leaks...cold and warm. Particularly focus on the intake manifold gasket area.

Yup, sounds like a vacuum leak. Could be a bad intake manifold gasket. Happened to my 1990 at about the same mileage as your 93. Common problem on 200k+ b230f engines. Check for codes. It should throw one. When mine went bad the check engine light came on.

A bad fuel pressure regulator can also make your engine shake, but it should shake all the time. BTW - How's is your gas mileage?

spray around intake with water mister and tighten intake maniflod bolts if needed as they do need a tweeking now and again. Worked wonders on 88 with 180 k on it

I replaced wires, distributor cap, rotor....still rough idling. You mentioned misting water near intake...what's that do? I'll snug up the intake bolts.

"You mentioned misting water near intake...what's that do?"

Water, WD40, carb cleaner, unlit propane torch...all of these are valid ,method to identify a vac leak. Type "intake manifold leak" in the search window and you will get millions of valid discussions about the problem.
