Hello to all.
I have been driving my 1991 740 sedan for several months with the speedometer/odometer not work. Previously I pulled the electrical plug at the differential's speed sensor, and rebuilt the connections at the plug. The wiring really needed that attention. The speedo and odo began working again albeit some what enthusiastic at times. That whole bouncing around thing. Now another complete failure.
Do I need to purchase a rebuilt speedo head unit? Should I sent mine in to be rebuilt?
Any suggestions?

    Had this problem with my wife's car. Rainbow Auto in Bellingham, WA installed a Dakota Digital speedo. Works great except they didn't get the cruise control to work.

      Yep, sounds like you need to spend the $220 I think for "Southern Electronics" in Richmond, VA. Phone is 1-800-446-2880. Two years ago and around 10,000 on this repair so far! I think we all have to do this sometime!I got 3-4 used units for junk-yard I installed, and they all eventually cooked! These people did a great job!

    As you say you have already done repairs to the rear wiring, it seems most likely to be the speedo itself, which is the now infamous Yazaki, that needs attention.
    Most shops no longer touch these; I did find a shop in Sacramento that knows them well and has been used so far successfully by another BB'er.

    Check the electrical plug back under the car at the rear differential. It is a problem spot. I'll bet the wiring is broken and no signal is being sent to the dash board mounted speedometer/odometer.
