I recently overhauled my instrument cluster due to the odometer stopping. I replaced the small gear known for failure, all of the bulbs, and installed the temperature compensation board bypass from IPD. Upon further inspection, I noticed that my ITT UAF2115 chip appears to be leaking or maybe even exploded out the side.It looks all burnt and the adjoining board is blackened a little. Could this be the cause that my speedometer is not working or is the part not in the picture at all? I tested the impulse sensor in the differential which tested fine. I removed the sensor and wiped it off and cleaned the connection with some QD Electrical cleaner. Any ideas? I can't seem to find a source to purchase this part to repair it. Is this cost effective or am I better off buying a cluster that does work from another 240 at a respectable Volvo only dismantler for $100? I wanted to install a tachometer anyways, as I will be doing a M47 swap soon. Any ideas on what else to check or where to buy this little chip from?

Lower down Art has notes on the electronic speedo and replacing the odo gear.

If you look at the 10th pic of the odo repair and compare it to the wiring in the electronic speedo notes, you'll see a neat way to bench test the speedo. But you'll need a low voltage transformer that puts out an AC current. The A/C provides the pulse to mimic the impulse sender.

With the cluster together, attach +ve 12v to the upper tab, -ve 12V to the center tab, and the A/C output to the lower and center tab. The speedo and odo should work.

Dave Samuels has the setup to test your speedometer and he has a supply of the 2115 chips. You may need more than one, if you insist on plugging the white/red tachometer wire onto the dual tab intended for cruise control.

Or you can obtain parts (other than the little gear of course) at your local PNP.

If the IC is leaking or burnt then it is probably dead. Otherwise I would have told you to check the ground points for the speedometer by the turn signal and the lower left of climate control center cluster. Contact David Samuels, he his on the BB here now and again and he can probably help you.

Thanks for the tip. I thought about taking the speedo to an electronics repair shop and having them desolder the old chip and resolder a new one in its place, but PA Speedo's prices look very reasonable and they would probably know every little weakness in the VDO speedometers. Now if I can get them on the phone.....Do you by chance know if their is a Central Coast Volvo Club? I know is one in Sacramento and one in the Bay Area, but I haven't heard of one down here in the peninsula.....

I belong to VCOA and the only chapters I know of are in the Bay Area or Paso Robles. Nothing on the peninsula that I am aware of. Some time back someone from Watsonville tried to get a local chapter started but nothing ever came of it.

PA speedometer has done work for me in the past and I can recommend them. They repaired a Tach for me.

Another vote for Palo Alto Speedometer. Old speedo head came back looking like new, calibrated slightly fast as I asked (kids' car) and has been working fine for 9 yrs now.

PA Speedo quoted me 150 to rebuild everything. Now, I am going to check with Wagonmeister. It is a shame that there is no Volvo Club in this area. I am a first time Volvo owner and I have alot of appreciation for these cars already. Well I hope to see that Red 245 rolling around the streets of Seaside. Have you had any experience with Volvo of Monterey in terms of parts ordering? I order most of my parts from IPD, FCP, and eeuroparts.com, but it is nice to know where you can turn in a pinch. I have had great luck with Turner Volvo in Sacramento. Bought a set of trans cooler lines from them for 90 bucks shipped to my front door. Price seemed fair to me. Now if I could only find that M47 for a swap....

I've had good luck with the local dealer and TascaParts.com. After you calculate shipping and tax sometimes it comes out about the same price. And if you buy local it's easy to return if necessary. I use to get parts for my 62 122 from the local dealer when it was still Scandia Motors and owned by Olie Anderson. And yes I'm that old. Now if OEM parts are not a priority then I would consider IPD.
