'92 240 water/coolant/leaves on driver's side floor and top of tunnel? 200

'92 240. Pulled wet carpet and it was soaked under the rubber insulating mats. Passenger side dry. Based on "greasy" feel, probably coolant. Assumed it was heater control valve but no indication that was leaking. Dried it thoroughly. All carpet and rubber padding out for cleaning/drying except piece on tunnel which I can't get out. Found old leaves at top of tunnel.
After night of rain, puddle on driver's metal floor. This definitely is water by color and feel. Dried all out.
Sat for a day, then took for 10 mile drive. Upon returning, foam under rubber tunnel mat soaked and greasy. Again, no clear evidence of leaking heater control valve.
1. Is there any easy way to determine whether it's a leaking core or leaking hose connection?
2. How are leaves (and water) likely getting in?
3. Short of pressure testing, any way to determine if all liquid is rain or AC sourced, with "greasy" feel from dried residue of old replaced heater valve failure (wishful thinking)?

    Since you have the carpet out. Buy some really cheap baby powder/talc. Dry out the pan area. Sprinkle the powder on the vertical surfaces. Run a garden hose, the powder-leak will leave a "snail trail" to track down the leak. You can always do the "taste test". Coolant is sweet.

      Turned out to be two different problems, and so far heater core appears ok. Heater control valve leaking severely. I removed and replaced it with a flushing T to monitor situation until replace with new valve. Other were water leaks from 1) screw holes holding metal cover on left of driver compartment, and 2) water seeping in through metal joint covered by large rubber seal between hood and engine compartment immediately past windshield.
      Dealing with that heater valve is a royal PITA. I'm concerned about damaging the new valve during the replacement process since very limited working space. If anyone has done this replacement, what is the exact order for assembly and any other hints to eliminate stressing fragile plastic valve arm.

    Hello,
    I also had a similar issue but it was on the passenger side. There were leaves on the tunnel just like you described in your situation. I only had water coming in though. What I would do to check for water leak is inspect aroung wiper mechanism and windshield area. Do this by running water over the windshield area. Do this with the air vents, the ones in front of the winshield, blocked. Then repeat the process again but this time run water into the vents. Make sure the drains are are working properly. While running the water chech under the dash area for any leaks. It wouldn t be a bad idea either to check the A/C drain hose. Good luck and I hope this helps!
