A dumb question... but the car's in a dark, wet garage and I can't get under it to look.

I went to buy disc brake pads tonight for the 1992 940GL. Got the front pads, but then the counter guy asked me if the car had independent rear suspension or not as there were two types of pads for the rear. Threw me for a loop... I didn't know the answer. Seems I replaced front and rear pads a few years back and that question never came up and I never had a problem. I didn't know that there was an optional suspension for that particular car.

SO... can anyone tell me, hopefully tonight, if the 1992 940 GL has independent rear suspension?

No IRS. Get your pads.

A US spec '92 GL does NOT have the IRS. It is a pretty common 940 NA model with some extra features such as Fog Lights front, and I believe leather interior. Mechanically it is indistinguishable from a '92 740.

It is a U.S. model sedan. Thank you for asking... I didn't know that made a difference!

Almost guaranteed to be independent suspension.

Wagons had a live axle. From what I remember, some markets of sedan did to, but not the US.

Flashlight will tell you for sure...there is no mistaking the difference.

Actually, based on the other other poster's response it sounds like I might be wrong, so please just get a flashlight and look for the telltale signs of IRS (boots on the diff to axle joint, Nivomat shocks, etc).

Only 940SE sedans got rear IRS. Also some 760's, some 960's and S/V90's.
