740 electric mirror problem 700 1990

I recently installed an electric mirror on the passenger side door of my folks 740GL sedan (Australian model - RHD). Orginally it was equipped with a manual mirror however, the car was pre-wired to take electric mirrors. This is the pre-93 mirror with four mounting screws.
I cannot get the mirror to work properly. It will not move in the up/down direction - it just makes a clicking sound. Also, to move the mirror left/right the switch on the driver's door must be moved up/down. I double checked all the wiring (some fool cut wires to get power to an engine immobiliser - no it wasn't me). All the wire colours match up correctly.
I tried moving wires around on the motor but didn't make any difference.
If it's clicking then I assume it's getting power so maybe something is stuck? I can move the mirror up/down by hand and it will click past the teeth of the gears but I don't want to keep doing that.
Any ideas?

Thanks
Brad

The clicking is either the motor is at the end of its travel range or the gears are stripped. Keeps from burning the motor up when you go full up/down/left/right. Not working up/down may be the switch. You need to pull the mirror out. You may know how, if not. Bottom of the housing you'll find hole. Small flat tip screwdriver. The mirror has a slip ring glue to the back. The motor has a round area that this slip ring goes into. Then you rotate the slip ring not even 1/4 inch with the screwdriver.

      Thanks for that aleekat,
I tested another power mirror I had access to and it works fine so it's not the switch. I was thinking that maybe there was a problem with the motor. I'll have a closer look and see what shows up.
      Cheers

As it turned out it was the switch. What I didn't realise was that the switch in the door was from a 94-on 940. When I tested a switch I had lying around from a mid-80's 760 the mirror worked perfectly.
There must have been a design change even though the switches look identical. They do have different part numbers. So a later 940 mirror switch will work fine with a later 940 mirror (with 3 mounting screws) but will not work with the earlier mirrors (with 4 mounting screws).
