Broken key - what are my options? 200 1978

I've had it in my head for a while that I should have more than one set of keys for my '78 242 but, genius that I am, I never had a spare made.

Dropped my keys en route to my car this morning, and lo and behold, my key broke. (This is just as well, because a few more steps and it probably would have broken off in the door or the ignition.)

Either way, though, this leaves me keyless. Can a locksmith copy a busted key? Is it possible to contact Volvo for a replacement, or am I 30 years too late?

I don't think you are 30 years too late. We have an independent lumber/hardware store in my area. It has a full time locksmith that mostly sits in his cubby and re-keys and repair locks. A ho-hum job most of the time. This type of locksmith or any good locksmith should be able to make a new key. If the blade is intact, it should not be hard. This guy would consider it a challenge. You will have to provide a blank, Walmart for a cheepie, maybe ebay for a good one. Or get a new key from Volvo based on the VIN number.

The busted key might be tough to copy. I wouldn't be surprised if a dealership could help you out with a key if you provided your VIN, but that might take a while. I would call a local locksmith (not the guy at home depot, but an actual locksmith) and see what they can do. Worst case scenario is you would have to remove your ignition from the car and bring it into them. I did this with a motorcycle ignition and was really impressed with what those guys can do.

A real locksmith should be able to copy even a broken key. Probably cost you about $40 if you take it in. If not, take in a door cylinder and they can make a key from that but it will be more expensive. Last resort, a mobile locksmith can come to your car and make a key but expect that to be VERY expensive (wife paid $250 for this service in a non-emergency situation on a weekday during operating hours) and you will still need proof of ownership before they will start.

Volvo Dealers can order you a key from the VIN with proof of ownership but prices and timing will vary greatly. Also, with a '78, what are the odds that the ignition cylinder and or door cylinder has been changed?

Given the condition and (what I know of) the history of this car, I'm confident the ignition/locks are original.

Found a reputable locksmith. They made a factory-spec copy from an "old key" database, all they needed were the model, year, and busted key for a comparison.

The new key works! I was concerned as it's missing some of the smaller contours of the prior key (which was also a copy, but likely a direct copy of the original). A little stiff in the door, but the car starts right up. Only cost me $20.

Thanks for the tips, all. Funny how little it takes to turn a car into a 3000 pound paperweight.
