14 degrees; cooling fan stuck on; dead battery; location of relay? 700 1992

Found the battery dead on my 1992 Rex/Regina wagon this morning. When I connect a charger to the battery the radiator cooling fan came on. It is much colder this morning than it was last night, and the fan definitely was not on when I left the car.

Found the correct looking relay on the passenger's side near the battery, but disconnecting it did not shut down the fan so it must be the RSR relay?

It is cold and dark and a leisure hunt for the correct relay would be uncomfortable at the least.

Can someone direct me to the relay location for the cooling fan, please.

Thanks
Randy

I cannot agree with disabling your fan.

I found that the fan on our '90 744 TI was seized - I also later found that my thermostat was bent to hold it open - but that is another story.

After I installed a new fan, I was surprised to see the fan run one morning in the winter as I cleaned and scraped our 2 cars.

My car had a new thermostat and fan. As an experiment, I ran the car at idle on a day where the temperature was 32 degrees - my fan started within 5 minutes.

I repeated this experiment a couple of times with the same results - the temperature gauge showed a normal reading.

Hence, I do not think that you should disable your fan and not repair the problem.

Keep in mint that unless you have modified it, your temperature gauge is not a good monitor of your engine temperature, and if it shows hot on the gauge, your car is HOT!

You might ask BB members if it is a good idea to disable your fan.

This car is mostly used for short runs to building supply stores, and hauling tools to the job site. If I have to go, it has to get me there (grin). I think I am good with the fan disconnected at this point in time (and temperature). That doesn't mean I wouldn't welcome further discussion.

I understand your concerns. I wonder at what temperature the fan engages?

The same thing happened to me. The relay has 3 wires going into it. I would reconnect the power wire (red wire coming from the battery) and then the others one at a time. Mine turned out to be the a/c overpressure switch that was turning it on. I disconnected that and I no longer had the dead battery problem and the radiator fan works as it should when the car gets too hot.

Is the pressure switch the one on the accumulator? If so, I did in fact pull it off before removing the relay and the fan continued to run.

Your suggestion of adding a wire at a time sounds like a good one once I find the time to chase the problem. Thanks.

The offending switch on mine was in a solid pipe behind the front bumper. There were 3 switches/sensors all bolted into the pipe, and the bad one was closest to the passenger side. If you troubleshoot it and eventually come up with a bad relay, I have a new one I bought before I found the malfunctioning switch. I'd be happy to part with it good and cheap.

I drove an entire winter with no cooling fan on the 89 740, it has the engine coupled fan.
I never sit with the car idling except for a minute at a traffic light, otherwise airflow from the car moving through the air provides ample air flow.

On my son's 92 940, there is only one relay (behind the headlamps) but several sensors feed into this. It appears from the wiring diagram that a defect in the low/high pressure A/C sensor switches on the condensers or in the radiator thermostat will trigger the fan. So maybe a sensor is frozen shut.

I went back out and pulled the battery and found the "relay pack" laying in front of the battery tray. I removed the three connectors and of course that disabled the fan.

I sure won't be needing any auxiliary cooling in the near future so once the battery takes enough charge to start the car I can get my day underway.

Thanks for taking the time to post to my question.

I don't know anything about 90's Volvos but I was going to suggest unplugging or clipping one of the wires to the fan. You won't be needing it for the next month or so...
        Best regards

Mine started doing that. Coming on when it wasn't supposed to. It was relay on reservoir.
