The trunk-lid-mounted latch should secured locked when pressed.
The lock is simple and durable. Sometimes, though rarely, dirt, corrosion (rust), and misalignment (rare unless body damage) can prevent the lock from latching closed and securing.
The power lock servo in the trunk lid on the driver (North American market) side can become stuck. The servo mechanism is not unlike the design used for the three Volvo 240 power door locks. Check for quality ground connection used by the trunk lid servo power lock mechanism. Though it sounds like you have a stuck problem someplace.
The hardware securing both the trunk lid lock and the latch can loosen. If loose, check for alignment and torque hardware for hardware size and hardware stack.
If you have key to lock and unlock the trunk, and you can lock it and it stays securely closed, the fault is in the power lock servo mechanism.
Like the lock itself, you can clean the mechanism using electronic parts cleaner (gentler than brake parts cleaner). Use a lubricant like spray white lithium grease to lube of the works in the power lock servo and the lock itself.
You may want to check the wiring also. Where the harness splits to send the wires up the driver side trunk lid hinge, the outer sheath and wire insulation can wear through.
May want to check the wire harnesses around the trunk for chafing. May want to check all grounds and use NoOx DeOx OXGuard or what not on the ground screw hardware.
RWD Volvos can get some funky grounding stuff going on like some English and French autos.
I dunno. I think that does it.
Questions? Hope that helps.

"Keep it away!," he meekly and fearfully chirped. "Keep that egg-nog AWAY!"
