Hello All,
Good news today! I finally got the motivation to fix my power steering issue. I had been driving for about 4 months without power steering. It was tough in the beginning but it definetely helped my arms. Anyways the reason for no powersteering was a rusted crossover line at the rack which gave out while performing a sharp U-turn one day. I immediately lost all the fluid in the system, Luckily I had one spare bottle which I poured in just to get me home without burning out the pump. After that I just removed the belt for the pump and since then I was just waiting for a good day to do it. Today was the day. I called around trying to get those damned crossover lines but nobody had them. They only come with a new rack...i.e. you can't get them seperately. But I wasnt about to pay 170 dollars for a rebuilt rack while my existing rack is in great condition. So i decided, with the help of my father, the just make new lines out of 1/4 in brake line tubing. At first look it seemed I would have to remove the rack due to clearance issues while trying to get at the fittings. I decided against it. I simply cut the lines off at the fittings, all four, and then hammered on a 11mm to remove said fittings. With the fittings off I noticed the lines had a strange type of flaring at the end. (I forgot to take pictures but will do so later this weeek) Luckily my father has a hydraulic flaring tool which I we used to make a similar flair as the old one. I put new O-rings at the ends of the lines and installed them. It wasnt easy but it is doable. After installing the belts I poured in some Synthetic Dexron4..or maybe 5? As of now I dont see any leaks. But will check again later this week. Hopefully it holds!
Also while I was at it I repacked the right front bearing and replaced the seal. The trunk was aslo adjusted at the hinges to make for proper seating against the trunk seal. I am getting a terrible water leak into the trunk..hopefully that adjustment helps....
Well thats about it for my ''rant''. If you guys have any questions or comments please feel free!
Thanks for reading,
Art

Art - I am curious, on my '90 745 TI, I was able to remove the mounting bolts for the rack and undo the u-joint in the steering column and drop the rack enough to change the lines.
Did you try anything like this? Is your car different.
Good work with your flaring tool.

I had thought about trying this but the bolts that hold the rack were too rusted so I did not want to risk breaking them.

Question - did the rack lines leak where they touch as they cross over?
Our '90 744 TI sprung a leak where the lines crossed over - I got a new line from Volvo and replaced the line.
When I started the car, the other line let go at the same place!!!
The lines had rubbed through each other.
BTW - it is possible on a 749 to drop the rack if you remove its mounting bolts and undo the steering u-joint.

Hey Art, I hope you would get around to taking a picture of the rack tube end. Obviously, the old one. My memory, from having replaced one on a Mitsubishi, is it makes a seal with swaged rib and O-ring, much like you have probably seen on the heater return pipe at the water pump, or will see someday at the oil delivery pipe. If this is so on the Volvo, I'd love to see what tool your dad had to do that one! I plan to use compression fittings when this eventually happens to me. I hope I can -- meaning, I hope the rust will locate in my favor.
As for the trunk leak, know that most are caused by cracked tail lights and not lid gaskets. The evidence will be water in the lens, shattered bulbs, etc. Maybe your mileage varies though, and some collision mishap has caused the deck lid to not seal. Powder helps trace the leak, and if the weather suits you, a hose and someone you trust to lock you in there with a flashlight might be the quickest way to find it.

Only one of the lines started to leak because of rust. They do not touch each other on my vehicle.

Art - thanks for answering my questions,
It is a pleasure to read some posts from a Brick owner that is willing to give as well as ask for help.

Hi Art,
I will try and get a picture tomorrow. The tool used was a Mastercool hydraulic flaring tool. It can do anything from bubble flares, to double flares, to push connect and others also. I do have cracked tailights so I guess those should be replaced soon. The trunk had been adjusted before by someone else...but only on the left side...go figure. I adjusted the right side and it now sits flush with the rear quarters.

I didn't know what to call it, but the "push connect" is the type of pipe end I found on the Mitsu rack crossover tubes. I looked at the Mastercool set just now, and see it does this. Amazing. Not a bad price either.

Thank you, Art.
That photo confirmed my suspicion. And now, due to the Mastercool tip you gave, I know what to call that type of connection.
