Help with wheel sizing and cross reference

I have a '91 740 and got a really good deal ($200) on 4 used Gislaved winter tires (almost new) mounted on Saab wheels (seller didn't know model). Tire size was perfect 185/65-15. Had them mounted on 4 rims from 740. Now I want to sell the rims. The sticker is still on the wheel rim - size 15x6, and when I looked up Hayes wheel 40834 found the lugs are 5-110. Couple questions - the Volvo 740 is 5-108, could have I used these on my 740, close enough? My guess is no. Secondly, I want to post these on Craigslist to get rid of them & am trying to find a cross-reference. I find compatible 5-110 for makes-models (mostly Saab, Saturn, GM), but I have to know the wheel diameter too, and most it doesn't list. Another question - the sticker clearly shows 15x6, but when I measure the wheel, the diameter is over 16" (not 15), and the wheel width is not 6" but is nearly 7". Is this like 2x4's, which are more like 1 1/2in. by 3 and some inches? If so why?
Thanks.

Help with wheel sizing and cross reference

There is a set of numbers and letters on your wheels that have nothing to do with SAAB - there are put there by the wheel manufacturer and can tell if the wheel will fit - something like 15x6 J - that is all a savvy buyer needs to know.

C'mon - do you think that BB members know about SAAB wheel compatibility? We don't even have a Volvo list.

    Do some work yourself!

Someone claiming to be Joe should cut Bonzo some slack. And your advice is incorrect. The numbers you cite refer to measurements of various wheel factors but not necessarily bolt circle diameter. I've owned multiple generations of SAABS--all with 15x6 wheels and each with a different circle diameter.
My advice to Bonzo is to find the SAAB chat room--it is similar to the BB. Recently my computer crashed and got replaced--so I don't have the address now. You'd probably do ok selling those rims there. -- Dave

There are many wheel compatibility charts on the web - you will be surprised to see about 200 wheels that will bolt on your 740 - you have to figure width and offset.

I'm not absolutely sure, but I'm thinking that rims are measured at the point of tire/rim interface. So that would be the inside surface of the lip (for width), and the shoulder that the tire bead rests on (for diameter).

OK, I just measured a 16" rim. It's roughly 17-1/4" in OVERALL diameter.
