They Won't Stop: wiper problem 200 1990

The precipitation was just starting so I turned on the intermittent option with the wipers, which have never been a problem.
But they won’t turn off when I put the switch back to neutral. The other speeds work properly, but there’s no off.
What’s the likely cause and fix?
Thanks

Check the grounds for the wiper motor. You may have to open the motor up or remove it to find them all.

I had a case where the wipers came on with the headlights...

The ground being spoken of stops the motor in its park cycle. It is a contact made through the gearbox cover. Two possibilities for bad connections exist, one at the contact inside the gearbox, and the second in the grounding of the wiper motor assembly through its mounting screws. Both are common troubles typical of Volvo wipers.

The wipers on my '91 would not turn off. While checking connections I unplugged the wiper relay for a look see. It was full of water from a leaky windshield. Dumped the water out, sprayed some electrical contact cleaner at the relay, plugged it back in and voila, wipers work as good as new.

As I recall the 240 Wiper relay was sometimes installed inside the floor reinforcement channel (under the left side of the Brake pedal). Pull back the carpet and see if you see wiring going into the floor channel and pull on it and the relay will emerge.

the floor channel can frequently get willed with water from a leaking Tindshield lower left corner and this can short the relay and cause the condition you have.

Unplug the relay, use a small screwdriver to push the tabs back so the relay can be removed from the housing and drain/dry it (hairdryer works good here).
Reinstall it to the firewall with double faced tape.

Use a shop vac to suck the water out of the floor channel and use the hair dryer to dry it, then figure out where the water is coming from (check the windshield gasket at the lower left corner). You can also put a piece of duct tape over the opening in the floor channel to help keep it dry.
