What years of the 240 will allow a B20 to drop in? 200

Hi,

This is just to clear up a question I have about 240s. I know the B20 was used in the 240, but I want to know what 240s will allow the B20 to drop in, since I found conflicting opinions in a google search.

What years will take the B20 without mods?

Thanks! Happy holidays

Do you want to install a B20 into a 240? I have a '75 B20 that came from a 240 that I am installing into my Amazon.

I have some parts that I am not going to use. Engine mounting brackets (aluminum), bellhousing, double crank pulley, and very special Volvo B20 electronic distributor with bosch module. This engine was converted to carbs, so I don't have the k-jet stuff.

The bell housing/transmission is the biggest hurdle -- the two motors sit differently 200

If you've ever looked at both the B20 (which is also called a "pushrod" engine) and the B21-23-230 (which is the red-block or OHC), you'll see that they sit very differently in the engine bay. The former sits upright, and the latter sits canted over to the right (passenger, in the US) side -- I suspect because of the overhead cam, it's taller and thus required the canted position in order to fit under the hood.

The biggest problem, therefore, is how the older engine is going to be bolted to a newer transmission. Smaller issues include supporting engine mounts.

Depends on your definition of "mods". Any 240/260 body will allow a B20 to drop in provided you have the 1975 B20 motor mounts & brackets and you are using a transmission--BW35-M40-M41-M400-M410--that is made for the upright motor. Of course anything other than a '75 will require mods to wiring and plumbing. -- Dave

See, this is why I frustrate my wife so. I answered the exact question asked. She hates that.

So, the full answer is that ANY 240 body CAN accept a B20 as long as you have all the parts from 1975 B20/240 to swap in...without modification. You are just swapping parts after all. For most cars you would have to have the engine and transmission x-members (I bet the trany x-member is the same as the late 140's), the bell housing and maybe transmission, some way to hook up the fuel line, the entire injection and ignition system from the B20 unless it is already K-jet then you might be able to make it work, most likely the speedo cable and head unless you put it in a car with the VSS in the pumpkin, maybe the front drive shaft section...and host of stuff I have not thought of.
