Taillights Always ON!! 200

Hello Fellow Brickboard Members,

I am writing in hopes that someone can help shed some light on this issue that I have been having. Well my ABS light has been on and I have been looking all over for that little box but I am unable to find it. When I discovered my brake light weren't working I decided to tackle that issue.

I traced the problem back to the driver side hinged of my 1991 Volvo 240 wagon. The wiring going through there was shot so I tried to piece it back together the best I could. It was all melted together so it was hard to distinguish between which wire went were. If I recall correctly there were a blue, yellow, black and gray wire.

After repairing the wiring, I decided to check the lights. Started it up and pressed the brake pedal and Viola! Brake lights! Also my ABS light went off as well. I tested it a couple of times and everything worked good. After about the fourth time checking it before I put it back together the Bulb Failure light came on and then my brake light wont turn off. I removed the brake light switch and they are still glowing.

I was wondering if anyone has had this issue? I am not sure why it would work before then just suddenly not turn off. If anyone could shed some light on this issue that would be greatly appreciated. So right now the Bulb failure light is on and the brake lights wont turn off. They are on regardless if the pedal is pushed or not. The only thing I could think is a possible ground issue, does anyone have a wiring diagram for the wires going through the hinges?

Thanks for the help!
Garrett

    Hey Art,

Thanks for the information. I did see that the ground wire on the drivers side tailgate hinge was damaged. However it was hard to tell the original layout of the wiring layout due to the wires being severely burnt and frayed. Is there a ground wire that attaches to both sides of the hinge? For example a ground point that connect to the inside of the hinge on the lift gate to a ground point that connects to the inside of the hinge on the roof?

    Thanks,
    Garrett

      UPDATE:

Brake lights function normally with key off. Then when I start the car they are off until I depress the brake pedal, then they stay on. Same result with fuse 1 and 11 removed.

      Thanks,
      Garrett

    Hi Garrett,

I guess there is not a wiring diagram specific to the tailgate hinges. At least not in the wiring diagram manual. Each system using the wires through the hinges has its own detailed drawing.

Two of the systems use a wire supplying key-on power through the tailgate harness: the rear wiper via the right hinge, and the defroster through the left hinge. Both systems, as well as the third, high-mounted brake lamp, need to ground through the hinges. Each hinge has a ground wire inside, which I have never seen unbroken. The problems this broken wire causes are rarely seen by the driver; only by folks following him, as the ground circuit is closed by the hinge pin or latch with varying success.

You could troubleshoot the "always-on" brake lights (I assume you meant brake lights, not tail lights) by disconnecting the circuits for the defroster and maybe the wiper, either by just turning the key off (brake lights should function normally without the key) or by removing fuse 1 to eliminate the wiper's parking source, or fuse 11 to eliminate the defroster power.
