Oxygen Sensor 200

Hey Fellas,

What are they symptoms of a bad O2 Sensor? Also where are they located I know there is one on the catalytic Convertor, but is this the only one? Everything helps,

Thanks,
Mackenzie

Only one 02 sensor in a 240. Located attached to the cat or sometimes the downpipe in front of the cat.

Some bad O2 sensor symptoms that I've experienced include poor mileage and low idle.

It'd help if you would state the model. I'll guess a 240. The year really helps to diagnose your problem.

Instead of asking, what symptoms do you have that give you cause to think the oxygen sensor on your Volvo 240 is bad?

If you have a 1988 or so and newer Volvo 240, you can use the OBD-1 system to check for faults. If it is a 1987 or so and older, you'll need a multimeter and possibly a 12 volt test light and continuity tester.

Oh, and if not already, get a Bentley, Haynes, or a Volvo OEM factory green Volvo 240 service manual.

Search here on the brickboard. Check out the FAQ at the top of the page. While for 700-900 autos, some of the same problem plague both.

Please reply with more info and maybe you'll get more help.

Hope that helps.

MacDuffed.

Good question that is going to get a vague answer from me.

When I have found a bad 0-2 sensor the car seemed to need a tune up but it was not missing or starting hard just not as smooth on acceleration.

It is just part of a self tuning system so I would say if you think it is out of adjustment in some way or other. It then becomes worth checking its voltage “varying operation” with a special flashing LED’s range meter that I have or swapping the sensor around with a new one to see if that “feeling” goes away if you do not have one of those or a “fast sample time” digital voltmeter.

I really have not changed that many of them. If I see that the end cap has burned or fell off then I say, guess its time no matter what! It usually has been a lot of miles to do that anyway.

Phil

go to the 700 FAQ' and look at the illustrations and explanation there for O2 sensor habitat and life cycle.
The info there will answer your questions.
If you get hung up ask back
