I posted about struts for my 940 a while back. Have old and dead Turbo gas in there now, need to do something. From last post new Sachs Advantage (gas shocks) poor quality, don't last, Bilstein TC's clunk in the rear. Read good stuff about the old KYB gas adjust, but can't get them in a strut. On KYB site, the list Excel G's for cheap, yeah, you get what you pay for, but anyone know what these are? Was looking for something firmer than OEM, but can't justify Koni's, etc. for this machine. Well, since I had old turbo gas struts/shocks I took a chance an ordered the Sachs equivalent. Came down to a coin toss, and since I was happy with the turbo gas for years, thats what it came down to. I'll report back once installed and have some miles on them. Mike

i hate the KYBs
one nine fourty has boge and the other has kyb.

Not sure if your 940 is turbo or not, but the boge turbo gas shocks are not intended (nor recommended) for 740 turbos. Not that a 740 is a 940, but the turbo gas are in my turbo, and they are the reason that I can't tighten the gland nuts completely. The front also sits about an inch higher than it's intended to.
Also, the boge turbo gas started to stop feeling "great" in only a few thousand miles. They're not soggy, but I want to replace them.
In other words, I don't like the boge turbo gas, and despite having turbo in the name, they aren't right for turbo cars (at least hte 740's).
I'm curious how the Excel-G struts are too. I love the KYB gas-a-justs and have had them in the rear of my 740T for about 20,000 miles - still love them. I only wish they came in struts for the front.

Same fit, same part no. for 7 and 9 on the Boge. The gland nut usually does Not go all the way into the strut tube, the top lip of the nut almost always if not always, sits several mm above the top of the tube.
Car sits higher, well all or almost all gas shocks do press up on the chassis; Bil HD makes an obvious difference for example so early on there may be some height difference, but over time that will change.

Well, these have been in the car for nearly 5 years now. When I bought them, I ignored the "not intended for turbo cars" warning that came with them.
The camber is also off- outside tire edges are wearing fastest - along with the increased gap between the fender and front tires on my car. All of the front bushings are <4 years and <30,000 miles old.
The shocks are the only thing in the front that's been changed out that I know can alter the ride height, and given that they had a warning I ignored on them, I figured that they must have different dimensions.
I don't want to hijack the thread, but I don't see what other single thing could be responsible.

I have some new ExcelG, and some new in the box Boge TurboGas made in Germany, both for the front. I was just about to put an ad up for them.
I also have new in the box GasaJust rears, and some good used ones.

Excel G is made to OE specifications (see their website!). I have Excel's in front and gas-a-just in back. My car handles very well, no complaints (740), I fully recommend this set-up.

Be careful with the KYB's. I've read mixed reports here about them. As you said, you get what you pay for...
Did you ever find out what is OEM now? Is it Sachs or Boge or something else? My inclination would be to go with OEM as I would think that Volvo must require them to meet certain minimum wear and durability standards.

I'll guess you have the solid "live" rear axle and not the independent Nivomat equipped self leveling rear suspension.
If available:
Cheapest yet good for 75-100k - Boge Automatics
Better and stiffer 100k - Boge Turbo Gas
I forget the corresponding Sachs model as Sachs and Boge are of the same company.
KYBs used to be very good. The mono tube high pressure Gas-A-just were great and beefy. A knock off of Bilstein HD and de Carbon by design, yet not the durability or quality and certainly the longevity.
I'm not certain of the current state of KYB offerings beyond the Gas-a-ajust and the anemic and not worth it and very soft GR2 (twin tube low pressure).
If anticipating front struts, a good mix may be Bilstein Touring in the front and Boge Automatics or Turbo Gas.
Best to use a make and model. Boge Automatics or, better, Boge Turbo all around.
Use FCP groton to gain specific model info and part numbers for what you want.
Then search the i-net at car part and car shock outlets on the Web.
FCP may be cheapest for Boge. Search the brickboard for recommendations on the best value for auto shock retailer online. You may want to try your local parts store chains. AutoZone can be very cheap.
I think we'd all like Bilstein HD or the super Koni yellows or oranges or reds (I forget) on a Volvo.
Sort of like wanting Michelin tires. For me, ONLY Michelin tires will do on any car I own, eventually.
