no start gear shift stuck in park, Can not get out with shift lock button 200 1993

Car is intermittently getting stuck in park and won't start. In wiggling wires around under the hood, checking the big main fuse by the battery and stomping on the brake pedal a bit it will start again. I do not think it has to do with the brake pedal as husband was standing outside the car now that I think about it after fiddling with wiring and reached in to start and it did. Ideas on what we should be looking for? Is there a relay possibly? Have checked both 7 and 12 fuses and they seem fine.

You might look at the neutral safety switch mounted on the shifter, this only allows the engine to start in park or neutral. Wiggling the shifter while trying to start the engine may get it started.

You can replace or clean the old NSS to fix this.

I had this with my son's 93 240. I finally swapped the shifter for an earlier one that didn't have the park lock. As I recall there is a solenoid that activates when the brake is depressed. It is under the dash above the drivers feet as I recall. A cable attaches to the shifter and pulls a detente which unlocks the shifter. It was this part that was broken on our 240. First off make sure the brake lights are coming on when this happens. That's what activates the solenoid. Good luck. Gary
