Random overdrive shut out increasing '84 200

It started doing this about a year ago, and will come and go. The longest it's stayed "lit up" and in third gear is about 25 miles and it goes normal. Often it's just for a minute, or ten.

I had the wire from the shifter though the floor break about 9 years ago, and that's put back nicely. It's not acting like it did then with the shuddering, etc. I'll just start it up and sometimes the light is on and it won't go into fourth till it decides to for it's own reasons. Do these overdrives do this a lot when they get older?

I tow a trailer fairly often, so disabling this entirely is not an option in my case. An emergency disable I'd be interested in hearing about, if , say, I'm on a road trip or something. I'd like to just get it to stop it, of course, if I'm told what to look at.

      I trouble shot my overdrive down to the relay. I would like to try to solder it. Where would I go to find out how.

        others can cover can cover this much better than I...and have. Do a search for thorough explanation but beware, resoldering the fuel pump relay is one of the most common repairs so you will get a gazillion hits so make your search specific.

        The short version is:

        Remove the cover off the relay
        Start with the big lugs and heat them with the soldering iron until the solder turns liquid (gets suddenly shiny)
        Follow the path of the original solder traces making sure not to cross them
        I rarely add solder but occasionally I will on the heavy lugs.

        For me a 35 watt iron with a pencil tip works but takes a while on the heavy lugs. It is perfect for the smaller traces. The goal is just to remove micro-cracks that are a result of years of use and a less than perfect manufacturing process.

          This is great! I'm all over that danged relay. I've been soldering components in and out of vintage hi-fi gear almost daily, as of late. I'll search for the specifics, like where the heck is it?, etc. The symptoms seem like they match something like this as the cause.

            No clue where it is on an '84 but on my '90 it was behind the glove box toward the drivers side. Big white thing. Heck, just grab all the relays an do them all at once. The fuel pump relay on most cars is a common failure item (yours might be one of the rare years that just uses a generic ice-cube relay...talk about dim memories).

            If you find the relays flopping about instead of clipped somewhere, figure out a way to re-install them so the cover points up at least a little and there is a drip loop in the wiring. The 240's are notorious for windshield leaks that can fill the fuel pump relay with water.

              On the 84, the relay (orange then) is in the same place -- just to the left of the glove box. Yes, 83/84 fuel pump and system relays are standard cube relays with nothing to resolder.

              The cracked solder generally occurs only on the large, thick pins used to mount the relay to its circuit board. The frame is the electrical connection to the moveable contact. None of the small components (resistors, transistors, IC, etc.) need resoldering, just the relay and the terminal connections.

                Looks like the special Swedish naturally degrading wire insulation experiment made it way down there, too. I'll see if I replaced mine all the way down to the connection. I forget.

                  "Swedish naturally degrading wire insulation experiment" sadly we can't blame the Swedes for that innovation. As Jeremy Clarkson likes to say, "It was zee Germans!"

                    You know, I thought I might get in trouble for that. But didn't the Swedes ask the Germans to make an eco friendly harness for them?

                    Is it in a Tolstoy novel? They ask the Russian peasant what makes the newly arrived mechanical harvester go. "It's either the Devil... or a German!"
