Using plastigage 120-130

Hope everyone had a nice Thanksgiving. We did.

I also had the opportunity to use plastigage to measure the clearance between the rods and journals.

Results: the squashed plastic line was barely as wide as the .003 measurement indicator on the gage.

Which means the clearance is over .003.

And to be sure...when I got the plastigage kit, it came with two colors, red and green. Is there a difference which I should use (I had used green)?

Anyway, with the clearance being above .003, which rod bearing size should I get? Standard?

By the way, I also meausured the journals all around...all looks good.

Thanks,

-DS

Normally each plastigage comes in a paper envelope with its own scale on it in the same color as the plastigage (or close). Be sure to use the color for the plastigage you are using.
Also for ROD bearings, when you torque them they will twist and screw up the plastigage unless you shim between the rod end and the crank throw so they can't. This is pretty important. You may have to use two sets of feeler gauges to do this. As you look down on the rod cap, put the one on the right closer to you and the one on the left away from you when you torque them. Actually it is better to shim both above and below on each side so you can unscrew the nuts without moving the rod cap also.

    Hello,

The red is for checking larger clearances, so go ahead and use the red for a more accurate measurement.

Are you going to check the main bearing clearance?

Alright, I'll use the red next.

And yes, I plan to check the main bearings as well.

Before i took the rod caps off, I did a free play on all of the rod bearings by pushing and pulling the piston assembly up and down (like wiggling) and could feel when the bearings hit the journals.. I tried that with the crank but it felt very solid.

Of course I'm sure that doesn't really mean anything.

And don't forget... you are now at the heart of the engine.

Absolute cleanliness from this point on. A speck of dust between the block and your bearing cap can through the measurement...

And in taking measurements, stock torque specs are a must. I'm sure you know and did that... just making sure.

Matt, thanks for making sure I did what I was supposed to do...yes, I made sure of that. 42 lbs torque max on the rod caps.
