which engines in 87 740 turbos 700 1987

Hi all,

which engines are in the 87 740 turbos? 4 cylinder....are they 8 valve or 16 valve.

this turbo is mated with a 5 speed manual tranny.....what should I be looking for to make sure the turbo's working well?

Thanks

Mark

    Few tips here:

    http://www.brickboard.com/FAQ/700-900/EngineTurbo.htm#Turbo_Expiration

If you're in a salvage yard. If the body is in good shape, then suspect engine/tranny or both. If car is totaled, T-boned, rear end. Then suspect eng/tranny still good.

87T, and all 7-9T cars except maybe one model in Italy, is an 8v sohc.

That year is susceptible to harness rot. It also has the 'small rods', 9mm instead of the later 13mm.

Jerry....what would be symptoms of bad turbo???? I've never even seen one before much less owned/maintained one.

can turbos be turned into normal aspirated engines?

I can't offer much detail; one simple thing is to stick your fingers carefully in the cold side and see how it turns, and if the shaft has fore/aft and side to side play.

Can they run without the turbo? Yes, but the lower compression makes for a slow car.
