1990 240 starts, then immediately shuts off 200

Hello, I have a 1990 240 with a bizarre issue. Today, it was treated to a new water pump. Started fine, ran with no problems. Took it out on the highway, and after about 45 minutes, the SRS light came on, and the dash lights dimmed some. I pulled into a gas station and shut it off. It wouldn't restart--battery dead. Because it was an old battery, I put in a brand new one while still at the gas station. Now, it turns over great and fires, but shuts off immediately after starting. It's as though the fuel pump is cutting it off, and right away. Also, if I hold the gas pedal down some while cranking it over and starting it, it'll run ok. But as soon as I let up, it dies.So it will stay at the gas station until it can get--and stay--going.
I'm not mechanically disinclined, and have a fair bit of previous 240/740 experience, but this one is new.

Anyone have any ideas???

    1990 240 starts, then immediately shuts off 200

    Check the wire harness that routes under the timing belt shroud and behind the the crank pulley at the front of the engine. Disconnect the battery before checking.

    You did not say you smell any burning electrics that let the smoke to escape.

    As you just completed a new water pump installation, follow the electrics (wire harness) from the alternator. If you spilled much coolant during the install, coolant can futz up electrics nicely.

    The wire harness portion underneath and behind the front crank pulley is vulnerable:
    - A missing splash guard (belly) pan exposes the that portion of the wire harness to detrimental conditions.
    - Deteriorating harness and wire insulation when the front engine (usually one of two lower) seals leak oil.
    - Engine heat stiffens wire harness sheathing and conductor insulation.

    Best to re-route and / or replace the wire harness section.

    This sounds like a classic Air Mass Meter failure, try starting the engine with the AMM's electrical connection disconnected (key off to connect or disconnect) If it starts and idles fine replace the AMM with a known good used one from the junk yard or ebay.

    Check your OBD codes.
