flame trap service--frequency? 900

how frequently does one need to clean the flame trap on a b230?

I have a 94 940 with around 170k miles, and I had the flame trap cleaned at 140k when I purchased the car, 3 years ago. It was quite blocked up at that point. I was recently under the car changing the oil and noticed a fair amount of oil leakage from under the intake manifold.

I do it every time I clean the throttle body so about every 30K. Rarely is there anything to clean and folks who use full synthetic report that they can just forget about cleaning it all together.

It is not just the flame trap that can be compromised, though. The oil separator, flame trap hose/holder to oil separator, the small vac line to the TB and the small orifice nipple it attaches to. I would say these rubber parts or a clog in the orifice are more common causes of leakage...at least for me. In your case, I would suspect a coked up oil separator if you flame trap was that clogged.

thanks for your response. I was just looking at flame trap kits on IPD. Is it easy to clean those parts that you describe, or should I order a kit and assume that I will just be replacing them? I'm pretty sure that a new flame trap was installed when the maintenance was done. If the separator is clogged, can it be cleaned?

I do not use synthetic oil, and my oil schedule is 5000 miles, as recommended by volvo. IPD's site speaks of flame trap trouble resulting from "extended" oil changes, but it is not clear if extended refers to the OEM guidelines of 10/5k, rather than the Jiffy Lube's recommended 3k.

The kit from IPD is pretty cheap so I would just get it. I cannot remember if it includes the small vac line though. You still need to take a safety pin or similar to the small orifice to make sure it is clear.

I have never had to remove and clean or replace the oil separator on any of my cars so you would be better off doing a search on that. One theme that keeps coming up on the board is that if you have to replace it, absolutely do not get an aftermarket one.

Personally, I would just do the kit, the orifice, clean the oily area and recheck at your next oil change.

I have no problem with a 5K oil change but I would make sure that you are fully warming up the car and driving it that way for a minimum of 15 minutes after at least once per week if you follow that.

        Dear ekphrasis,

Hope you're well. Only in the worst emergency, would I let anyone from Jiffy Lube - or any similar service - put even a finger on my vehicle.

An oil change interval of 5K miles is not "extended". That is normal for standard oil. For synthetics, 7,500 miles is a "normal" interval.

If your car is used: (a) in hilly/mountainous terrain or (b) in high ambient temperatures (e.g., U.S. South/Southwest; Arabia; North Africa; Northern Australia, etc.), then a shorter interval is sound. If your car is used for towing, a shorter interval also is sound.

The flame trap insert should be inspected regularly and cleaned or replaced.

The usual cause of over-pressure is not the flame trap insert. Rather it is the breather box, the small hose that runs to the intake manifold, or the brass manifold nipple itself. I "bored-out" the manifold nipple, to improve "air flow".

        Hope this helps.

        Yours faithfully,

        Spook
